  1. Verism

About artistic preference artistic movement Verismo Image with unknown copyright status removed Image Romanverismhead.jpg right 200px An example of verism in the Roman style. Verism is the artistic preference of contemporary everyday subject matter instead of the heroic or legendary in art and literature a form of realism. The word comes from Latin verus true . In Roman art File Head old Roman Glyptothek Munich 320.jpg thumb right A veristic Roman head. Verism was often used by the Roman art Romans in marble sculptures of heads. Verism, often described as warts and all , shows the imperfections of the subject, such as warts, wrinkles and furrows. It zeroes in on the minuscule details of the human head. Although the marble heads themselves came from the Greeks, this style is extremely different from Art in Ancient Greece Greek head sculptures because the Greek would idealize the subject, and liken the subject to a god. The Veristic style was favoured in the late Republican period. It has been noted that veristic Roman sculptures were generally credited to a Greek or someone of Eastern background, and argued that this suggests the veristic style is of Greek origin Fact date November 2007 . Verist Literature The subject of the so called veristic portraits of the late Republic holds a special fascination for the classical art historian, especially on the vexatious question of the origins of the style a question which still remains, essentially, open and unsolved. Yet despite the thoroughness with which the topic is debated, one possible influence upon the emerging veristic style, that of the ancestral portrait, continues to receive inadequate consideration. 1. Umberto Giordano

File Umberto Giordano by Gaetano Esposito.jpg thumb Umberto Giordano portrayed by Gaetano Esposito in 1896 Umberto Menotti Maria Giordano 28 August 1867 &ndash 12 November 1948 was an Italian composer, mainly of opera s. He was born in Foggia in Apulia Puglia , southern Italy , and studied under Paolo Serrao at the Conservatoire of Naples . His first opera Marina , was written for the competition staged by the music publishers Edoardo Sonzogno Casa Sonzogno for the best one act opera, remembered today because it marked the beginning of Italian verismo the winner was Pietro Mascagni Mascagni s Cavalleria rusticana . Giordano, the youngest candidate, placed sixth among seventy three with Marina , which generated enough interest for Sonzogno to commission an opera to be staged in the 1891 92 season. The result was Mala Vita , a gritty verismo opera concerning a labourer who vows to reform a prostitute if he is cured of his tuberculosis. This caused something of a scandal when performed at the Teatro Argentina , Rome, in February 1892. It played successfully at Vienna, Prague and Berlin, and was re written as Il Voto a few years later in an attempt to raise interest in the work again. Giordano tried a more romantic approach with his next opera, Regina Diaz , to a libretto by Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti and Guido Menasci 1894 , but this was also a failure, taken off the stage after just two performances. Giordano then moved to Milan , and returned to verismo with his best known work, Andrea Ch nier 1896 , based on the life of the French poet, Andr Ch nier . Fedora opera Fedora 1898 , based on Victorien Sardou s play, featured a rising young tenor named Enrico Caruso it was also a success, and is still performed today. His later works are much less known, but occasionally revived. He died in Milan at the age of 81. The most important theater in Foggia has been dedicated to Umberto Giordano. 1. I Rantzau

Mascagni operas I Rantzau The Rantzau Family is an opera in four acts by Pietro Mascagni 1892 , based on a libretto by Guido Menasci and Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti , based on the play Les Rantzau 1873 by French writers Emile Erckmann Erckmann and Chatrian , after their novel 1882 Les Deux Fr res The Two Brothers . The soprano solo in Act I is an excellent example of true verismo aria, and has an emotional impact that parallels the composer s work in Cavalleria rusticana . The soprano tenor duet is impressive enough and has been recorded in modern times by Placido Domingo and Renato Scotto , but the opera remains elusive, mainly because only one recording has been made of the full opera, and that is difficult to obtain. ref name Mascagni.org http www.mascagni.org works rantzau recordings Mascagni.org, recordings , accessed April 3, 2009. ref Roles class wikitable Role Voice type Premiere cast, 10 November 1892 ref http www.italianopera.org italianOPERAuk.php?f compositori M c2194562.htm ref br Conductor Gianni Rantzau baritone Mattia Battistini Giorgio tenor Fernando De Lucia Luisa soprano Hariclea Darcl e Giacomo Rantzau bass voice type bass Luigi Broglio Fiorenzo baritone Edoardo Sottolana Giulia mezzo soprano Stefania Collamarini Lebel tenor Giovanni Paroli References Reflist DEFAULTSORT Rantzau, I Category Italian language operas Category Operas by Pietro Mascagni Category 1892 operas Category Operas Category Operas based on plays italian opera stub ca I Rantzau es I Rantzau it I Rantzau hu A Rantzau fiv rek ...   more details

  1. No Love for Johnnie (novel)

Italic title No Love for Johnnie by Wilfred Fienburgh , was first published in 1959 by Hutchinson publisher Hutchinson . Essentially a political novel it deals with the life of Johnny Byrne, a cynical and burnt out politician whose career has ostensibly stalled due to his leftist leanings in a conservative Labour government. It was made into No Love for Johnnie a film in 1961, directed by Ralph Thomas . Plot introduction Stylistically the novel belongs to the genre associated with John Osborne , John Braine , Shelagh Delaney and other realist writers who were to find their voices in the new wave of British verismo art forms. The narrative allows the reader to examine the internal conflicts that Johnnie Byrne negotiates as he attempts to find some merit in his desultory existence. Under scrutiny are his relationships with his cold, politically driven wife, Alice, whose own politics are a point of contention for Johnnie. His neighbour, Mary and the young woman, Pauline illuminate Byrne s darker aspects. As a piece of literature it may be considered light weight but re readings will reveal a tight structure and a credible analysis of the way powerful individuals, the makers of social change, are paradoxically vulnerable cyphers in a world where they too may be ill served by cupidity. Even though the weak ending of his relationship with a much younger woman may seem cliched and trite by twenty first century standards, it is handled with a certain amount of legerdemain and irony so that it escapes being trite. There is a sense that Byrne lands on his feet by his very own inaction in political matters. By the novels end, it is clear that Byrne himself has failed to influence his own life. and appears to be a pawn at the mercy of events around him.
