  1. Leonine verse

Leonine verse is a type of versification based on internal rhyme , and commonly used in Latin verse of the European Middle Ages. The invention of such conscious rhymes, foreign to Classical Latin poetry, is traditionally attributed to a probably apocryphal monk Leonius poet Leonius , who is supposed to be the author of a history of the Old Testament Historia Sacra preserved in the Biblioth que nationale de France Biblioth que Nationale of Paris . This history is composed in Latin verses, all of which rhyme in the center. Fact date September 2007 It is possible that this Leonius is the same person as L onin Leoninus , a Benedictine musician of the twelfth century, in which case he would not have been the original inventor of the form. Another very famous poem in Leonine rhyme is the De Contemptu Mundi of Bernard of Cluny , whose first book begins Hora novissima, tempora pessima sunt &mdash vigilemus. br Ecce minaciter imminet arbiter ille supremus. br Imminet imminet ut mala terminet, qua coronet, br Recta remuneret, anxia liberet, thera donet. These are the last days, the worst of times let us keep watch. Behold the menacing arrival of the supreme Judge. He is coming, he is coming to end evil, crown the just, reward the right, set the worried free, and give the skies. As this example of tripartiti dactylici caudati dactylic hexameter rhyming couplet s divided into three shows, the internal rhymes of leonine verse may be based on tripartition of the line as opposed to a caesura in the center of the verse and do not necessarily involve the end of the line at all. Alcmanian verse refers to the dactylic tetrameter in Ancient Greek Greek and Latin poetry . 1. Fixed verse

Fixed verse forms are a kind of wikt template template or formula that poetry can be composed in. The converse of fixed verse is Free verse poetry, which by design has little or no pre established guidelines. The various poetic form s, such as meter, rhyme scheme , and stanzas guide and limit a poet s choices when composing poetry. A fixed verse form combines one or more of these limitations into a larger form. A form usually demands strict adherence to the established guidelines that to some poets may seem stifling, while other poets view the rigid structure as a challenge to be innovative and creative while staying within the guidelines. Examples of Fixed Verse forms Dynamic list Haiku A Japanese form designed to be small and concise by limiting the number of lines and the number of syllables in a line. 1. Carmen (verse)

In Ancient Rome , the term carmen was generally used to signify a Verse poetry verse but in its proper sense, it referred to a Spell paranormal spell or prayer , form of expiation , execration , etc. Surviving examples include the Carmen Arvale and the Carmen Saliare . ref name cyclo 1728 ref Purposes Spells and incantations were used for a variety of purposes. If a spell was intended to harm someone, the State could interfere to protect him. For instance, it was not unusual for a farmer whose crops had failed to accuse another farmer of having, by a carmen , lured the crops away. Tibullus , in a poem in which he complains that an old woman has bewitched Marathus, takes the opportunity to recount various feats of witches, such as transferring crops from one field to another. Similarly, Pliny the Elder records in Naturalis Historia XVIII. 41 42 that a certain freedman , Furius, by using better implements and better methods than his neighbor, obtained richer crops from a smaller strip of land. A neighbor compelled Furius to go before the tribes and accused him of having bewitched his field. 1. Last verse harmonisation

Unreferenced date June 2008 Last verse harmonisation is a technique of hymn accompaniment used by church organists. As the name suggests, this is a practice whereby the last verse of a hymn tune will be accompanied on the organ music organ with an alternative harmony supporting the melody , which remains unchanged. If the congregation is led by a choir, then the choir will usually sing in unison during the last verse, as opposed to in parts usually SATB for the other verses, and the trebles boy sopranos or soprano s or occasionally tenors may sing a descant . The purpose of last verse harmonisation is to add interest, variation and excitement to a hymn tune . Organists recommend it as a technique which encourages the congregation to sing. More experienced organists with a greater understanding of harmony will usually improvise the last verse, whereas beginners are likely to use harmonisations that have either been included in the hymnal , or published in a collection of harmonisations. When a descant is sung, the organist must either keep to the original harmony , or use an alternative one that has been written specifically for use in conjunction with the descant , as the melody of the descant may not sound right with other harmonies. Characteristics Usually the organ accompaniment to the last verse of a hymn tune will be heavier in musical terms than the standard harmony . 1. Accentual-syllabic verse

Unreferenced date December 2009 Accentual syllabic verse is an extension of accentual verse which fixes both the number of stresses and syllables within a line poetry line or stanza . Accentual syllabic verse is highly regular and therefore easily scannable. Usually, either one metrical foot , or a specific pattern of metrical feet, is used throughout the entire poem thus we can talk about a poem being in, for example, iambic pentameter . Poets naturally vary the rhythm of their lines, using devices such as inversion meter inversion , elision , feminine ending s, the caesura , using secondary stress , the addition of extra metrical syllables, or the omission of syllables, the substitution of one foot for another. Accentual syllabic verse dominated literary poetry in English from Chaucer Chaucer s day until the 19th century, when the freer approach to meter championed by poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Ralph Waldo Emerson and the radically experimental verse of Gerard Manley Hopkins and Walt Whitman began to challenge its dominance. ref Stallworthy, Jon. Versification. Norton Anthology of Poetry. Ed. Margaret Ferguson, Mary Jo Salter, and Jon Stallworthy. New York W.W. Norton and Company, 2005. 1251 1275. ref In the early 20th Century, accentual syllabic verse was largely supplanted by free verse through the efforts of Modernists such as Ezra Pound and Amy Lowell . Nonetheless, some poets, such as Robert Frost , W. H. Auden , Philip Larkin , Howard Nemerov , and James Merrill continued to work though not exclusively in accentual syllabic meters throughout the century. Though it has not regained its position of dominance within English poetry, accentual syllabic verse remains viable and popular in the 21st century, as evidenced by the success of such poets as Richard Wilbur and the various New Formalism New Formalists . Livesay, who was also the editor at the time, found that there were not enough magazines that discussed Canadian poetry and for this reason designed the new CVII magazine to continue the discussion on modern poets and poetry. Later, the Roman numeral would be replaced by a 2 and the magazine would include an even wider range of discussion material.
