  1. Limbus vertebra

File T2 W Sagittal image.jpg thumb T2 W Sagittal image A limbus vertebra is a defect in the anterior margin of the vertebral body mostly . Anterior superior corner of a single vertebra is the common site for this defect. It can also be seen at the inferior corner as well as the posterior margin but very rarely. This anterior intraosseous disc herniation which produces Limbus vertebra was first described by Schmorl in 1927 and later in detail by Niedner. It appears as a triangular shaped bone fragment, it always mimic a fracture but it is actually an intra vertebral body herniation of the disc material. This is not a disease or does not require any urgent medical attention, but it is a defect which occures less commonly. it does not create any problems hence needs no medication or any kind of treatment. Limbus vertebra, if it is in posterior aspect may cause nerve root compression but the anterior ones wiil not create any difficulty. It generally appears as a triangular margin at the anterior superior of the vertebral body. There will be sclrotic margins on the fragment and of the adjacent vertebral body. It can be differenciated by a fracture as fractures will not have sclerotic amargins that as limbus vertebra. This defect is commonly seen in patients have had Scheuermann s Disease It can be called as Rim lesions . The term Limbus vertebra derived from the Latin nominative limbus and genitive modifier vertebrae, thus is singular. Schmorl s nodes are also caused by herniation of the nucleus pulposus but that appears more centrally of a vertebra. System MeshName MeshNumber DorlandsPre c 56 DorlandsSuf 12260904 The body is the largest part of a vertebra , and is more or less cylindrical in shape. For vertebrates other than humans, this structure is usually called a centrum . Its upper and lower surfaces are flattened and rough, and give attachment to the intervertebral fibrocartilages , and each presents a rim around its circumference. In humans, in anatomical terms of location anterior view, the body is convex from side to side and concave from above downward. Behind, it is flat from above downward and slightly concave from side to side. Its anterior surface presents a few small apertures, for the passage of nutrient vessels. On the posterior surface is a single large, irregular aperture, or occasionally more than one, for the exit of the basi vertebral veins from the body of the vertebra. Articular surfaces The morphology biology morphology of the anterior and posterior faces of a centrum, where it articulates with other vertebral bodies, partially determine the flexibility and strength of the vertebral column . There are several basic configurations. If both the anterior and posterior surfaces are flat, the vertebra is called acoelous or amphiplatyan this type of vertebra is good for dealing with compressive forces. If both surfaces are concave, the vertebra is called amphicoelous , and permits some motion across a wide range of directions. If the anterior surface is concave and the posterior surface is convex, the vertebra is procoelous the opposite ... 0 pages 288 289 ref Additional images gallery Image Cervical vertebra english.png Cervical vertebra ... 1. Vertebra prominens

Infobox Bone Name PAGENAME Latin GraySubject 21 GrayPage 101 Image Gray89.png Caption Seventh cervical vertebra MusclesOrigins MusclesInsertions Articulations MeshName MeshNumber DorlandsPre v 07 DorlandsSuf 12854570 Vertebra prominens is the proper name for the seventh cervical vertebra . The most distinctive characteristic of this vertebra is the existence of a long and prominent spinous process which is palpable from the skin surface, hence the name. This spinous process is thick, nearly horizontal in direction, not bifurcated, but terminating in a tubercle to which the lower end of the ligamentum nuchae is attached. The seventh cervical vertebra C7 has the most prominent spinous process only in about 70 of people in the remainder, either C6 or T1 the first thoracic vertebra is the most prominent. The transverse processes are of considerable size, their posterior roots are large and prominent, while the anterior are small and faintly marked the upper surface of each has usually a shallow sulcus for the eighth spinal nerve , and its extremity seldom presents more than a trace of bifurcation. The foramen transversarium may be as large as that in the other cervical vertebrae, but is generally smaller on one or both sides occasionally it is double, sometimes it is absent. On the left side it occasionally gives passage to the vertebral artery more frequently the vertebral vein traverses it on both sides but the usual arrangement is for both artery and vein to pass in front of the transverse process, and not through the foramen. Sometimes the anterior root of the transverse process attains a large size and exists as a separate bone, which is known as a cervical rib . 1. Sacralization of the fifth lumbar vertebra

nofootnotes date February 2011 Sacralization of the fifth lumbar vertebra or sacralization is a congenital anomaly , in which the transverse process of the last lumbar vertebra L5 fuses to the sacrum on one side or both, or to Ilium bone ilium , or both. These anomalies are observed at about 3.5 percent of people, and it is usually bilateral. Although, sacralization may be a cause of low back pain , it is asymptomatic in many cases especially bilateral type . Low back pain in these cases most likely occurs due to chronic faulty biomechanics. In sacralization, the L5 S1 intervertebral disc may be thin and narrow. This abnormality is found by X ray .
