A vertical search engine, as distinct from a general web search engine , focuses on a specific segment of online content. The vertical content area may be based on topicality, media type, or genre of content. Common verticals include shopping, the automotive industry, legal information, medical information, and travel. In contrast to general Web search engines, which attempt to search engine indexing index large portions of the World Wide Web using a web crawler , vertical search engines typically use a focused crawler that attempts to index only Web pages that are relevant to a pre defined topic or set of topics. Some vertical search sites focus on individual verticals, while other sites include multiple vertical searches within one search engine. Vertical search offers several potential benefits over general search engines Greater precision due to limited scope Leverage domain knowledge including Taxonomy taxonomies and ontologies Support specific unique user tasks Domain specific search Domain specific verticals focus on a specific topic. John Battelle describes this in his book, The Search blockquote Domain specific search solutions focus on one area of knowledge, creating customized search experiences, that because of the domain s limited corpus and clear relationships between concepts, provide extremely relevant results for searchers. ref cite book last Battelle first John title The Search How Google and its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture publisher Portfolio location New York year 2005 ref blockquote References Reflist Category Searching Category Internet search Category Internet search engines de Vertikale Suchmaschine es Buscador vertical it Vertical search nl Verticale zoekmachine ro C utare pe vertical ru ta tr Dikey arama ... more details

Vertical transmission , also known as mother to child transmission , is the transmission medicine transmission of an infection or other disease from mother to child immediately before and after birth during the perinatal period. A pathogen s transmissibility refers to its capacity for vertical transmission. The concept of vertical transmission is also used in population genetics to describe inheritance of an allele or condition from either the father or mother. Vertical transmission tends to evolve benign symbiosis . It is therefore a critical concept for evolutionary medicine . Because a pathogen s ability to pass from parent to child depends significantly on the hosts ability to reproduce, pathogens transmissibility tends to be inversely related with their virulence. In other words, as pathogens become more harmful to and thus decrease the reproduction rate of their host organism, they are less likely to be passed on to the hosts offspring, since there will be fewer offspring. ref cite journal title An empirical study of the evolution of virulence under both horizontal and vertical transmission last1 Stewart first1 AD last2 Logsdon first2 JM last3 Kelley first3 SE journal Evolution year 2005 month April volume 59 issue 4 pages 730 739 doi 10.1554 03 330 pmid 15926685 ref Although AIDS is sometimes transmitted through perinatal transmission, its virulence can be accounted for by the fact that its primary mode of transmission is not vertical. Image Vertical slice.png 160px thumb A vertical slice from the components of a project. A vertical slice , sometimes abbreviated to VS , is a type of Milestone project management milestone , Benchmarking benchmark , or time limit deadline , with emphasis on demonstrating progress across all components of a project . It could be considered a project management buzzword , and may have originated in the games industry . The term vertical slice refers to layers that form the structure of the software code base. It is mostly used in Scrum development Scrum terminology where the work is planned in terms of features or stories . For example as a very basic approach, a software project may consist of three layers or components Data access layer bottom , Business logic layer middle and User interface Layer top . In this very common approach, a vertical slice means a bit of every layer. Again as an example, a new feature request like showing x information on main screen would contain these work bits Work in the UI that will display the information Work in the business layer to transform the information Work in the database layer to store fetch the information. So a vertical slice can be defined as the sum of the work that has to be done in every layer that is involved in getting a specific feature working . A vertical slice doesn t necessarily affect every component in the software. For example, if the solution contains a web service, it would live in the same floor as the UI, and a feature like supporting login logout in webservice that involves only the web service doesn t require a change in the UI, but the business and database access layers. Unreferenced date March 2009 The vertical viola , or alto violin , is a stringed instrument with the range of a viola that is played vertically in the manner of a cello . It is the fourth highest member of the violin octet after the treble, soprano, and mezzo violins . The standard viola is about as big as can conveniently be played under the chin. The physicist instrument maker Carleen Hutchins , working during the 1960s, reasoned that a viola played vertically could be made larger, and that a larger viola might produce a better sound. Based on principles of instrument design she had observed in top quality existing instruments, Hutchins designed a viola about 6  cm. 2 inches longer than the regular viola, intended to be played vertically like a cello. Despite Hutchins s original intention, a few violists, equipped with long arms or perhaps just extreme motivation, have played her viola horizontally. The fundamental acoustic principle underlying the vertical viola is that the main body resonance resonance of the wood of the instrument should match the second highest string, and the main cavity resonance resonance of the air the instrument contains should match the third highest string. On a viola these strings are D and G, respectively. The standard viola is too small to achieve this matchup of string frequency to resonance frequency. The same design principle was used by Hutchins to design a complete family of eight stringed instruments, commonly called the violin octet , of which the vertical viola has been the most successful. Since all of the instruments are designed based on the violin, Hutchins gave the name alto violin to her vertical viola design. Hutchins s instrument has attracted admiration for its power and beauty of tone. The cellist Yo Yo Ma has employed a Hutchins vertical viola to perform and record B la Bart k s Viola Concerto. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Vertical restraints are competition restrictions in agreements between firms or individuals at different levels of the production and distribution process. Vertical restraints are to be distinguished from so called horizontal restraints, which are found in agreements between horizontal competitors. Vertical restraints can take numerous forms, ranging from a requirement that dealers accept returns of a manufacturer s product, to resale price maintenance agreements setting the minimum or maximum price that dealers can charge for the manufacturer s product. So called intrabrand restraints such as resale price maintenance govern products made by a particular manufacturer, while interbrand restraints regulate a dealer s or manufacturer s relationship with its trading partner s rivals e.g., English clause s . Quintessential examples of interbrand restraints include tying contracts, whereby a purchaser agrees to purchase a second product as a condition of obtaining a so called tying product, and exclusive dealing agreements, whereby a dealer agrees not to purchase products from suppliers that are rivals of the manufacturer. United States Anti Trust Law Section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act governs all vertical restraints involving interstate commerce in the United States. Section 3 of the Clayton Act governs interbrand restraints involving the sale of goods. Finally, Section 2 of the Sherman Act governs restraints entered by monopolists. For several decades, courts were quite hostile to many vertical restraints, declaring them unlawful per se or nearly so. See, e.g., Albrecht v. Herald Co., 390 U.S. 145 1969 declaring maximum resale price maintenance unlawful per se . More recently, courts have reversed course and held that most such restraints should be analyzed under the rule of reason. See Leegin Creative Leather Products v. The vertical bundle of a smooth fiber bundle is the subbundle of the tangent bundle that consists of all vectors which are tangent to the fibers. More precisely, if &pi E &rarr M is a smooth fiber bundle over a smooth manifold M and e &isin E with &pi e x &isin M , then the vertical space V sub e sub E at e is the tangent space T sub e sub E sub x sub to the fiber E sub x sub containing e . That is, V sub e sub E T sub e sub E sub &pi e sub . The vertical space is therefore a subspace of T sub e sub E , and the union of the vertical spaces is a subbundle V E of T E this is the vertical bundle of E . The vertical bundle is the kernel mathematics kernel of the pushforward differential differential d &pi T E &rarr &pi sup 1 sup T M where &pi sup 1 sup T M is the pullback bundle symbolically, V sub e sub E ker d&pi sub e sub . Since d&pi sub e sub is surjective at each point e , it yields a canonical identification of the quotient bundle T E V E with the pullback &pi sup 1 sup T M . An Ehresmann connection on E is a choice of a complementary subbundle to V E in T E , called the horizontal bundle of the connection. Example A simple example of a smooth fiber bundle is a Cartesian product of two manifold s. Consider the bundle B sub 1 sub M × N , pr sub 1 sub with bundle projection pr sub 1 sub M × N &rarr M x , y &rarr x . The vertical bundle is then V B sub 1 sub M × T N , which is a subbundle of T M × N . If we take the other projection pr sub 2 sub M × N &rarr N x , y &rarr y to define the fiber bundle B sub 2 sub M × N , pr sub 2 sub then the vertical bundle will be V B sub 2 sub T M × N . In both cases, the product structure gives a natural choice of horizontal bundle, and hence an Ehresmann connection the horizontal bundle of B sub 1 sub is the vertical bundle of B sub 2 sub and vice versa.
