British Army The British Army during the Victorianera served through a period of great technological and social change. Victoria of the United Kingdom Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, and died in 1901. Her long reign was marked by the steady expansion and consolidation of the British Empire , and Industrial Revolution industrialisation and the enactment of liberal reforms by both Liberal Party UK Liberal and Conservative Party UK Conservative governments within Britain. The British Army began the period with few differences from the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars which fought at the Battle of Waterloo . There were three main periods of the Army s development during the era. From the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the mid 1850s, the Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington Duke of Wellington and his successors attempted to maintain its organisation and tactics as they had been in 1815, with only detail changes. In 1854, the Crimean War , and the Indian Rebellion of 1857 highlighted the shortcomings of the Army, but entrenched interests prevented major reforms from taking place. From 1868 to 1881, sweeping changes were made by Liberal Party UK Liberal governments, giving it the broad structure which it retained until 1914. On Victoria s death, the Army was still engaged in the Second Anglo Boer War , but other than expedients adopted for that war, it was recognisably the army which would enter the World War I First World War . The Industrial Revolution had changed its weapons, transport and equipment, and social changes such as better education had prompted changes to the terms of service and outlook of many soldiers. Nevertheless, it retained many features inherited from the Duke of Wellington s army, and since its prime function was to maintain the expanding British Empire , it differed in many ways from the conscripted armies of continental Europe. Unreferenced date December 2009 Victorian Dad is a character in the United Kingdom British comic Viz comic Viz . First appearing in Viz in the 1990s, Victorian Dad lives in the contemporary age but dresses and acts like a parody of a stereotypical gentleman of the Victorianera . He has a large top hat , always wears a suit, and sports a walrus moustache and monocle . According to Viz editor Chris Donald , Victorian Dad is similar to his creator Graham Dury because Dury himself is actually a puritan . Victorian Dad s first name is given by his wife as Lupin in one episode, and the family name is revealed to be Pooter in another, presumably taken from the name of one of the central characters in the satirical Victorian novel Diary of a Nobody by George and Weedon Grossmith. He is married with a young son and daughter, and an older married daughter. The rest of his family do not share his conservatism conservative , prudish beliefs, which usually results in misery for them. For example, Victorian Dad once reacted with fury and horror when he realised his daughter was left handed , based on the old belief that left handed people were somehow evil. On another occasion, he threw his grown up daughter, who was married three years previously, out of the house calling her a slut hussy when she announced that she was pregnant.
