  1. Captain (videotex)

The Captain system Character and Pattern Access Information Network System was a Japan ese videotex system created by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone NTT . Announced in 1978, it was trialled from 1979 to 1981, with a second larger trial held from 1982 to 1983. The service launched commercially in 1983. It was closed on March 31, 2002. Captain differed from comparable European videotex systems by not being based on the transmission of alphanumeric characters. The Japanese kanji character set has over 3,500 characters, and in the late 1970s to try to include a character generator in the user s terminal that could retain and then generate so many characters on demand was seen as prohibitive. Instead pages were therefore substantially sent to the end user as pre rendered images, using coding strategies similar to facsimile machine s. By December 1985 Captain had 650 information providers, and the next year was rolled out to 245 cities. However, by March 1992 the system still only had 120,000 subscribers. Like other videotex systems worldwide with the exception of the French Minitel , it never broke though to achieve mass market usage. 1. Alex (videotex service)

Image alextel.jpg thumb Alextel unit Alex was the name of an interactive videotex information service offered by Bell Canada in market research from 1988 to 1990 and thence to the general public until 1994. The Alextel terminal rented to customers was a NAPLPS terminal with Cathode ray tube CRT , attached Keyboard computing keyboard , and a 1200 bit s modem for use on regular phone lines. In 1991 proprietary software was released for IBM PC s that allowed computer users to access the network. The system operated in the same fashion as Minitel , whereby users connected to various content providers. The most popular and most expensive sites were chat rooms. Using the service could cost as much as 0.30 CA per minute, and many users terminated their subscription upon receiving their first invoice. The advent of the World Wide Web contributed to making this service obsolete. On 29 April 1994, Bell Canada sent a letter to its customers announcing that the service would be terminated on 3 June 1994. In that letter, Mr. T.E. Graham, then Director of Business Planning for Bell Advanced Communications, stated that Quite simply, the ALEX network is not the right vehicle, nor the appropriate technology, at this time to deliver the information goods needed in our fast paced society. The Alextel terminal is reportedly usable as a dumb terminal for VT100 emulation. References Serge Proulx 1991 . The Videotex Industry in Qu bec The Difficulties of Mass Marketing Telematics. 1. CEPT Recommendation T/CD 06-01

CEPT Recommendation T CD 06 01 was a standard set in 1981 by the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations CEPT for the display of Videotex specifically, for the Videotex Presentation Layer Data Syntax . It was revised a number of times in the 1980s, and also later redesignated as recommendation T TE 06 01. The standard aimed to bring a degree of harmonisation between Europe s emerging videotex systems, which had been diverging along national lines. It recognised four baseline profiles with conformance criteria set out in Annex C based on existing videotex services CEPT1 Bildschirmtext BTX Germany CEPT2 Teletel France CEPT3 Prestel UK CEPT4 Prestel Plus Sweden and defined criteria for a harmonised enhanced service. National videotex services were encouraged to either follow one of the existing four basic profiles or if they extended them, to do so in ways compatible with the harmonised enhanced specification. Responsibility for the standard was passed to the new European Telecommunications Standards Institute ETSI in 1988. The ETSI version of the standard is designated ETS 300 072. It consists of a maximum of fourteen binary coded decimal digits and is sent over the Packet Layer Protocol PLP after the packet type identifier PTI . The address is made up of the international data number IDN , which consists of two fields the 4 digit data network identification code DNIC and the up to 10 digit national terminal number NTN . The DNIC has three digits to identify the country one to identify a zone and two to identify the country within the zone and one to identify the PDN allowing only ten in each country . 1. ITU V.23

Unreferenced date March 2009 The V.23 standard was an early modem standard approved by the ITU in 1988. It specifies frequency shift keying audio frequency shift keying AFSK to encode and transfer data at a rate of 1200 bits per second , Duplex telecommunications Half duplex half duplex at 1200 baud Mode 2 , or at a fallback rate of 600 baud for the forward data transmission channel, and an optional 75 baud backward channel. V.23 Mode 1 AFSK uses a 1300 Hz tone F sub Z sub for mark typically a binary 1 and 2100 Hz F sub A sub for space typically a binary 0 , and a 1700 Hz center frequency F sub 0 sub . V.23 Mode 2 AFSK uses a 1300 Hz tone F sub Z sub for mark typically a binary 1 and 1700 Hz F sub A sub for space typically a binary 0 , and a 1500 Hz center frequency F sub 0 sub . V.23 backward channel AFSK uses a 390 Hz tone F sub Z sub for mark typically a binary 1 and a 450 Hz F sub A sub for space typically a binary 0 . In some Europe European countries, and perhaps elsewhere , V.23 Mode 1 AFSK modulation, without the backward channel is used to transmit Caller ID information over Plain old telephone service POTS lines in the Public Switched Telephone Network public telephone network . The 75 baud backward channel was originally envisioned for use in error correction schemes, but V.23 was also widely used in Videotex applications where the backward channel was used to sent keyboard data in an asymmetrical full duplex scheme.
