It was recorded in concert on July 13, 1991 at the Vienna Staatsoper in Vienna , Austria . Many listeners regard this album as Jarrett s masterpiece. It has a forty two minute arch like opening movement that exhibits a much greater debt to classical music than Jarrett s earlier improvised concerts. Jarrett himself wrote in the liner notes to this album I have courted the fire for a very long time, and many sparks have flown in the past, but the music on this recording speaks, finally, the language of the flame itself. Reception The Allmusic review by Richard S. Ginell awarded the album 4 stars stating Jarrett s exalted judgment is close to the mark though more Eurocentric than ever, these are his most impressive solo performances since Sun Bear. . ref name Allmusic Ginell, R. http allmusic.com album vienna concert r141499 review Allmusic Review accessed September 9, 2011 ref Album ratings rev1 Allmusic rev1Score rating 4 5 ref name Allmusic Track listing Vienna, Part 1 42 05 Vienna, Part 2 26 03 All compositions by Keith Jarrett. It is an important and rare example of a Late Antiquity late antique scientific text. The 491 vellum Folio printing folios measure 37 by 30  cm and contain more than 400 pictures of animals and plants, most done in a naturalistic style. In addition to the text by Dioscorides, the manuscript has appended to it the Carmen de herbis attributed to Rufus of Ephesus Rufus , a paraphrase of an ornithological treatise by a certain Dionysius, usually identified with Dionysius of Philadelphia , and a paraphrase of Nicander s treatise on the treatment of snake bites. The manuscript was created in about 515 and was made for the Byzantine Empire Byzantine princess Juliana Anicia , the daughter of Emperor Olybrius Anicius Olybrius . Although it was originally created as a luxury copy, there is some indication that in later centuries it was used daily as a hospital textbook. In 1679, Vienna was visited by one of the last big Great Plague of Vienna plague epidemics . Fleeing the city, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor Emperor Leopold I vowed to erect a mercy column if the epidemic would end. In the same year, a provisional wooden column made by Johann Fr hwirth was inaugurated, showing the Holy Trinity on a Corinthian order corinthian column together with nine sculpted angel for the Nine Choirs of Angels . In 1683, Matthias Rauchmiller was commissioned to do the marble works, but he died in 1686 and only left a few angel figures. Several new designs followed, among others by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach , who designed the sculptures at the base of the column. Finally, the project management was assigned to Paul Strudel , who based his work on the concept of theatre engineer Lodovico Burnacini . Below the Trinity figure, Burnacini envisioned a cloud pyramid with angel sculptures as well as the kneeling emperor Leopold, praying to a sculpture of faith.
