Unreferenced date December 2009 Vietnam Era is a term used by the United States United States Department of Veterans Affairs Department of Veterans Affairs to classify veterans of the Vietnam War . For VA purposes, in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations Chapter 38 Paragraph 3.2 f , the Vietnam Era is The period beginning on February 28, 1961 and ending on May 7, 1975, inclusive, in the case of a veteran who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period. The period beginning on August 5, 1964 and ended on May 7, 1975 inclusive, in all other cases. The U.S. Congress , U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs elected to designate those years as such to accord special privileges to all persons who served the country s armed forces during that time. Similar designations have been made for other periods of war. Because the beginning and end of the Vietnam War was rather ill defined , given its characteristics, it was necessary for the Federal government to set forth exact years of the conflict. The years contained in the Vietnam Era therefore do not necessarily coincide with the dates of any historical events prior to or after the war. However, for a number of reasons it was necessary to declare dates for that era. Military personnel who served during that period are said to have been on active duty during the Vietnam Era no matter where they may have been stationed around the world. Various departments of federal, state and local governments as well as private employers often give Vietnam war era and other veterans special consideration regarding employment and sometimes assign extra qualifying points to veterans. The Commonwealth Veteran Fencing Championships is a sport specific sporting event held in the Commonwealth of Nations . It is an age restricted event for fencers aged 40 and above, organised by the Commonwealth Veterans Fencing Association in cooperation with the Commonwealth Fencing Federation . The first championships were held in 1995 and subsequently held on each odd numbered year until 2009. From 2010, the event timing was changed to occur on even numbered years, to coincide with every second Commonwealth Fencing Championships . Loughborough 1995 The first championships were held in Loughborough, England. Five countries competed Canada, England, Isle of Man, Northern Ireland and Wales. Orphan date July 2009 The Illinois Veteran Grant IVG is a program whereby the state of Illinois provides educational benefits to certain Illinoisans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States . Recipients of the IVG are provided with the full amount of tuition and fees to attend any approved public college or university in Illinois. In effect, Illinois veterans can pursue an academic degree for the cost of textbooks alone. Veterans who were resident in the state of Illinois at least six months before entering military service and who have completed a full year or more of federal active duty or have served in a designated combat zone may be eligible for the grant.
