Garndiffaith Viaduct is a brickwork railway viaduct that formerly carried the Brynmawr and Blaenavon Railway over the valley at Abersychan in South Wales . It was built by the engineer John Gardiner between 1871 4 to extend the London and North Western Railway line that principally carried coal from Brynmawr and Blaenavon to meet the Great Western Railway at Abersychan and Talywain railway station Abersychan and Talywain . In 1912 the lines were opened to passenger services operated by the GWR as well as mineral trains, making it easier for miners and other workers to travel up and down the valley. This service ceased in 1941 due to the exigencies of the Second World War , but the viaduct remained in use until 1980 when the last mineral train left Blaenavons Big Pit mine. The track was shortly dismantled by British Rail thereafter. Today the viaduct has survived into preservation and is in relatively good condition, now forming part of the National Cycle Network National Cycle Network Route 46 . Reopening the viaduct to railway traffic has become one of the long term ambitions of the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway as the viaduct is wide enough to accommodate route sharing. Citation needed date July 2009 It is built of brick fired from brick clay quarried on site during construction, and took two years to build, including the construction of embankments at both ends which required the movement of around one million tons of earth by human and horse power. It was designed by William Cubitt and styled after a Roman aqueduct . It was originally opened by Queen Victoria on 6 August 1850, but she was so frightened of its height that she refused to travel across it. The train carrying her had to stop, upon which she left the train and entered a horse drawn carriage to travel the length of the bridge on the ground. She then re entered the train at the other end of the viaduct and continued her journey. Citation needed date April 2009 It carries the East Coast Main Line , which has to narrow from four tracks to two to cross the viaduct, making it a wikt bottleneck bottleneck restraining capacity over this strategic transport route. Good views of it can be obtained from Drygrange Bridge and the modern A68 road bridge immediately downriver. There has been talk of including the viaduct in the local Trail footpath network but it is not normally open to the public, although access to the bridge is fairly easy for those who wish to go up. The Landore viaduct is a railway viaduct over the Swansea valley and the River Tawe at Landore in south Wales . It provides a link between Swansea city centre and the West Wales Line to the South Wales Main Line . The valley crossing provides a panoramic view of Landore, Kilvey Hill , the Liberty Stadium, Swansea Liberty Stadium and the Swansea Enterprise Park . The viaduct dates as far back as 1850. The original structure incorporated a diverse range of structural design elements and was constructed in timber. The structure was updated in 1889, using wrought iron for the central span.
