  1. Violin Concerto (Rubinstein)

one source date October 2011 The Violin Concerto in G major , Op. 46, written in 1857 by Anton Rubinstein is a romantic music Romantic concerto. It is his only violin concerto, written when he was 28, which was the time when the establishment of a professional conservatory in Russia was under discussion, thus the concerto was unjustly neglected. The three movements provide an admirable opportunity for virtuoso performance. However there is nothing particularly Russian about the work, rather showing the fine craftsmanship of a Mendelssohn and an undoubtedly professional technical command of structure and orchestration. 1. Violin Concerto (Glazunov)

The Violin Concerto in A minor , Op. 82, by Alexander Glazunov is one of his most popular compositions. Written in 1904, the concerto was dedicated to violinist Leopold Auer , who gave the first performance at a Russian Musical Society concert in Saint Petersburg St. Petersburg on February 15, 1905. The British premiere of the concerto followed just over a year later, under the direction of Henry Wood Sir Henry Wood and with Mischa Elman as soloist. The violin concerto is quite representative of Glazunov s technically brilliant style. The work contains three movements. Moderato Andante sostenuto Allegro The slow second movement is seamlessly inserted by the composer into the middle of the first movement, which is an original and rare structural peculiarity of this composition. The main cadenza at the end of the second movement was composed by Glazunov himself. It utilizes extensive double stopping technique and is considered one of the hardest parts of the concerto. The concerto is written as a single continuous 21 minute long piece and is performed without any pauses between movements. 1. Violin Concerto in A minor (Bach)

File Johann Sebastian Bach.jpg thumb Bach, the composer of the Violin Concerto in A minor in 1748 The Violin Concerto in A minor , BWV 1041, was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach . It is unknown exactly when the work was composed, but copies dated 1730 suggest it may have been composed later than the other two concertos for violin, perhaps during Bach s time as director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig Citation needed date January 2011 . Structure and analysis The piece has three movements Allegro moderato Andante with an ostinato style theme Allegro assai The motifs of the theme of the Allegro moderato appear in changing combinations and are separated and intensified throughout the movement. In the Andante Bach uses an insistent pattern in the bass part that is repeated constantly in the movement. He focuses the variation in the harmonic relations. In the final movement Bach relies on bariolage figures to generate striking acoustic effects. Instrumentations and transcriptions The Harpsichord concertos J. S. 1. Violin Concerto No. 5 (Paganini)

The Violin Concerto No. 5 in A minor was composed by Niccol Paganini in 1830. It is one of the most widely performed out of Paganini s last four violin concertos, which are owned by Paganini s estate and are not in the public domain . A typical performance lasts about 40 minutes. The concerto is in three movements Allegro maestoso br Andante , un poco sostenuto br Finale Rondo . Andantino quasi Allegretto Only the solo part of Paganini s Concerto No.5 is extant the original part either was not written down or has not yet been discovered, although the former seems more likely. According to the manuscript, it was composed no earlier than the spring of 1830 and it was actually written after the fourth concerto. This concerto by the most famous of all violin virtuosi can be called a monologue for the violin. Thus, even though mutilated, the Concerto No.5 has not actually been lost since the essential solo part exists the concerto can be completely performed if suitably reconstructed. In 1958 Vittorio Baglioni entrusted this task to Frederico Mompellio on behalf of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, and in September of 1959, the concerto received its premier performance. Franco Gulli was the soloist and Luciano Rosada the conductor. The success of this performance induced Gulli to present the concerto in many European cities. The first theme of the majestic first movement, a theme that generates from Le Streghe Witches s Dance and the beginning of the second are also found in Paganini s Warsaw sonata. The Andante is perhaps musically the central section of the work. In the third movement the recurrent idea is an ingenious melody alla campanella . 1. Violin Concerto No. 1 (Mozart)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s Violin Concerto No. 1 in B flat major , K chel Verzeichnis K. 207, was originally supposed to have been composed in 1775 when Mozart was 19 , along with the other four wholly authentic violin concerti. However, analysis of handwriting and the manuscript paper on which the concerto was written suggest that the actual date of composition might have been 1773. It has a common three movement structure. Movements are Allegro Moderato Adagio Presto. in the usual fast slow fast structure. The concerto is full of brilliant passage work with running sixteenth notes and is generally characterized by high spirits. The Rondo in B flat for Violin and Orchestra Mozart Rondo in B flat , K. 269 for violin and orchestra, is also connected to this concerto. It was intended to replace the finale movement, and was composed to fulfill the recommendation of Antonio Brunetti, a violinist in Salzburg at the time. Nonetheless, the concerto is typically performed with the original finale, and the K. 269 Rondo remains a separate concert piece. 1. Violin Concerto No. 1 (Szymanowski)

Karol Szymanowski s Violin Concerto No. 1 , Op. 35, is considered one of the first modern violin concertos. It rejects traditional tonality and romantic aesthetics. It was written in 1916 while the composer was in Zarudzie, Ukraine Zarudzie , Ukraine . Paul Kochanski advised Szymanowski on the fine point of violin technique during the composition of the concerto, and he later wrote the cadenza . The work is dedicated to Kocha ski. The likely inspiration for the concerto was Noc Majowa, a poem by the Polish poet Tadeusz Mici ski . The concerto doesn t follow or duplicate the poem, yet Szymanowski s ecstatic, sumptuous music is an ideal companion to Mici ski s language poem All the birds pay tribute to me for today I wed a goddess. And now we stand by the lake in crimson blossom in flowing tears of joy, with rapture and fear, burning in amorous conflagration. poem The Violin Concerto No. 1 was premiered 1 November 1922 in Warsaw with J zef Ozimi ski as the soloist.
