    The University of the Visual & Performing Arts lang ta , is the only university of visual art s in Sri Lanka . Established in July 2005, its campus is situated in Colombo . History The precursor of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts was the Ceylon Technical College , established in 1893. Its Department of Arts and Aesthetics moved from Horton Place to Haywood College on 1 October 1949. The institution was renamed School of Art and awarded a diploma in Fine Arts after its six year course. On 2 July 1952, the institution was again renamed as the Government College of Fine Arts and began instruction in singing and acting. The departments of Music and Dance were started in Colombo, and the school was renamed the College of Fine Arts . After the First University Act of 1972, the College of Fine Arts become the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Ceylon in 1974. In 1978, 63 students received the Bachelor of Arts degree. The restructuring of the university system in Sri Lanka affiliated of the institute to the University of Kelaniya in 1980. A Special Gazette Notice formally announced the creation of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts on 1 July 2005. Sarath Amunugama was assigned as First Vice Chancellor. The academy is affiliated to the University of Mysore , and offers courses in drawing, painting, sculpture, graphics, applied arts, photography and photo journalism and art history. CAVA awards degrees in Bachelor of Fine Arts Bachelor of Fine Arts BFA and Master of Fine Arts Master of Fine Arts MFA . History CAVA was originally started by the Maharaja of Mysore Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV in 1906 as the Chamarajendra Technical Institute. The foundation stone of this building, dedicated to Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar Chamarajendra Wodeyar , was laid by George V of the United Kingdom . It was built at a cost of Rs. 2.5 lakhs , and completed in 1913. It is an eloborately composed structure which runs along the road. It has a rectangular facade , which is composed of pediment ed dormer s and gable s. The institute is located close to the city s railway station, on Sayyaji Rao road, which is currently a busy road with several commercial establishments. Under Independent India, in 1981 the Karnataka state government renamed the Chamarajendra Technical Institute as CAVA. Following the suggestions of a committee headed by the prominent Russian painter, Svetoslav Roerich , CAVA was established on the lines of the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art J.J.
