Other uses Substrate disambiguation Substrate The substrate of a vivarium refers to the material used on the floor of the enclosure. It can affect humidity levels, filtration as well as the well being of the inhabitants. The appropriate substrate depends on the type of animal in the enclosure. Functions and Considerations Substrate is used in all types of vivarium and holds an important role in the well being of the inhabitants. Although having an aesthetic factor, the substrate is an extremely important factor when keeping animals in a vivarium. Some types of substrate can be used to hold humidity, this is essential when keeping certain types of rainforest dwelling species that require high humidity levels during shedding and food digestion. The substrate may also be used as a drainage system for excess water. Substrate is also useful for burrowing species as they can dig into the substrate as they would in their natural habitat. It is also useful for egg laying species that would naturally bury their eggs in the earth floor. The substrate also adds to the natural feel of the enclosure and gives the vivarium a more natural feel and look. ref cite web url http badmanstropicalfish.com vivarium vivarium.html title Setting up a Vivarium publisher Badmanstropicalfish.com date accessdate 2011 10 04 ref Types of substrate The type of substrate used depends on the natural habitat of the species kept, for instance a desert dwelling species should be kept on a slate tile substrate, whereas a rainforest dwelling species should be kept on soil or bark chips. Some keepers may choose to use less aesthetic substrates such as paper towels , newspaper or even tiles and linoleum , especially for newly acquired or quarantined specimens. This is easier for the keeper to keep maintained and there is less risk of the substrate being consumed by the inhabitants. ref cite web url http www.leopardgeckocare.net vivarium substrate different types of reptile substrates and bedding.html title Different ... more details

The Vivarium was the location where the ancient Romans kept wild animals used in Colosseum their entertainments . It was near the Porta Maggiore Prenestina Gate of Rome. During the Siege of Rome 537 538 first siege of Rome in the Gothic Wars, the Goths broke part of the wall of the Vivarium in an attempt to enter the city. This attempt failed because the Aurelian Walls regular city wall manned by Byzantine soldiers was behind the Vivarium wall and Belisarius attacked the rear of the Goths near the Prenestina Gate. ref cite book title Barbarians, Marauders, and Infidels The Ways of Medieval Warfare last Santosuosso first Antonio year 2004 publisher MJF Books location New York, NY isbn 9781567318913 page 26 pages url accessdate ref ref cite book title History of the Wars Book V The Gothic War pt. 1 last Procopius authorlink Procopius others H. Unreferenced date May 2009 Image Bak.JPG thumb right 300px A paludarium A paludarium is a type of vivarium that incorporates both terrarium terrestrial and aquarium aquatic elements. Paludaria or paludariums usually consist of an enclosed container in which organisms specific to the biome being simulated are kept. They may be maintained for purely aesthetic reasons or for scientific or horticulture horticultural purposes. The word paludarium comes from the Latin word palus meaning marsh or swamp and arium which refers to an enclosed container. Paludaria can range in size from small, easily displayed boxes to biospheres large enough to contain entire trees. A prominent example of a very large paludarium is the rainforest exhibit at the Montreal Biodome . clear Flora and fauna Since paludaria encompass water, land and air, many different types of fauna can be encompassed in the enclosure. While amphibians , fish and reptiles are the most common, people have kept insects and even birds in them. The animals that are most suited for a paludarium are the animals that naturally live in water land type environments, swamps, marshes or mangroves. Flora suited for paludaria include plants that thrive in very humid environments or wetland areas. A common plant is the genus Anubias which is hardy and easy to maintain. Unreferenced date December 2009 Historiae Ecclesiasticae Tripartitae Epitome , the abridged history in twelve books of the early Christian Church known as the Tripartite History, was the standard manual of Church history in Medieval Europe . The work was compiled, under the direction of Cassiodorus , in about 510 CE, by his assistant Epiphanius Scholasticus . Epiphanius was assigned the translation into Latin of the Greek church histories of Socrates Scholasticus , Sozomen and Theodoret , written in the previous century. He would probably have used the library assembled by Cassiodorus at Monasterium Vivariense, the monastery of Vivarium on his family estates at the foot of Mount Moscius on the shores of the Ionian Sea. Cassiodorus revised and corrected the work and arranged it into one continuous history of the church. His scriptorium then published it for the use of the clergy. The book attained a high reputation. Only Eusebius of Caesarea Eusebius History , in a Latin translation by Tyrannius Rufinus Rufinus competed with it as the official version of church history in the West, until original sources began to be rediscovered, edited and printed by Humanism humanist scholars in the 15th century.
