The Coup of the Volunteers was a stand off that occurred in 1993 in Lithuania near Kaunas . Background The group, then called SKAT Savanori koji kra to apsaugos tarnyba Voluntary National Defense Service , was established when Lithuania attempted to reclaim its independence from the Soviet Union in 1990. The unit was formed when a group of young volunteers agreed to serve without pay and were sworn in. The Soviet army still had full control over Lithuania. On March 11, 1990, Lithuania declared its independence. The Soviet Union responded by imposing an economic blockade and later by using military force January Events Lithuania in events of January 1991 . The volunteers, as well as unarmed civilians, played a role in defending Lithuanian government institutions. In 1992, the Democratic Labour Party of Lithuania LDDP , the former Communist Party of Lithuania , won a majority in the country s first democratic elections and formed the government. At the time, Lithuania s military was still very weak, and Russian troops were still in the country despite the end of Soviet links. The volunteers were seen as disloyal to the new, formerly communist government, so there were plans to dissolve the SKAT. Funding was reduced, not enough weapons and uniforms were provided, and several incidents between SKAT and the police took place, with the volunteer group portrayed as criminals. The Coup In 1993, an armed SKAT unit near Kaunas refused to obey the government and hid in local forests, where they were joined by additional recruits. The leaders of LDDP considered attacking the rebels. The state was on the brink of a civil war, which would have served Russia s interests, demonstrating that Russian troops were still necessary in Lithuania to prevent disturbances and riots. But the Russian army left Lithuania just before the coup. The leaders of other military units refused to attack the rebels ... leaders of the volunteers. On 29 August 1930, Benoy Basu , casually clad in a traditional Bengali attire, breached the security and fired at close range. Lowman died instantly and Hodson, the Superintendent of Police, was grievously injured. The next target was Col N.S. Simpson , the Inspector General of Prisons, who was infamous for the brutal oppression of the prisoners in the jails. The revolutionaries decided not only to murder him, but also to strike terror in British official circles by launching an attack on the Secretariat Building the Writers Building in the Dalhousie square in Kolkata. On 8 December 1930, Benoy Basu along with Dinesh Gupta and Badal Gupta , dressed in European costume, entered the Writers Building and shot Simpson dead. British police started firing. What ensued was a brief gunfight between the three young revolutionaries and the police. Some other officers like Twynam , Prentice, and Nelson suffered injuries during the shooting. Refimprove date January 2008 Brant s Volunteers was an irregular corps raised in spring of 1777 during the American Revolutionary War by Joseph Brant which fought on the British side in the Province of New York . The corps initial size was about one hundred men consisting of one fifth Mohawk and the rest New York Loyalists. The Loyalists were mostly of English, Scottish or Irish descent and drawn from New York. They wore a piece of yellow lace on their hats as identification. Why the Loyalists would prefer Brant s command is difficult to explain some refused any other service whatsoever. A simple explanation is that they were wild and undisciplined.
