He studied medicine in Heidelberg under ophthalmologist Theodor Leber 1840 1917 and neurologist Wilhelm Heinrich Erb 1840 1921 . In 1897 he attained the title of professor extraordinary at Heidelberg, and in 1909 became a professor at the eye clinic in University of Halle Halle . In 1914 he became a professor of ophthalmology in G ttingen . In 1904, Hippel described a rare disorder of the retina , and in 1911 discovered the anatomical basis of this disease, which he named angiomatosis retinae . However it wasn t until 1926 that Swedish pathologist Arvid Lindau recognized an association between angiomatosis of the retina with hemangioblastoma s of the cerebellum and other parts of the central nervous system . This condition is known today as the Von Hippel Lindau Disease VHL . Hippel contributed several writings to textbooks regarding anatomy and diseases of the eye. He was the son of Arthur von Hippel physician Arthur von Hippel 1841 1916 , a pioneer in corneal transplantation , and an uncle to German American physicist Arthur R. von Hippel 1898 2003 .     Arthur von Hippel October 24, 1841 October 26, 1916 was a German ophthalmologist who was a native of Fischhausen , East Prussia . He was the father of ophthalmologist Eugen von Hippel 1867 1938 . Arthur von Hippel studied medicine at the Universities of University of Konigsberg K nigsberg , University of Munich Munich and University of Berlin Berlin , where he earned his doctorate in 1864. Following graduation he furthered his training in Prague , and afterwards became an assistant at the eye clinic at Konigsberg. In 1879 he became a full professor of ophthalmology at the University of Giessen , and in 1890 returned as a professor to the University of Konigsberg . In 1892 he attained the chair of ophthalmology at the University of Halle , and in 1901 went to G ttingen , where he was director of the newly founded University Eye Clinic. He retired in 1914, and was replaced at the University of G ttingen G ttingen eye clinic by his son Eugen. Von Hippel made contributions in his research of intraocular pressure, color blindness and near sightedness , but is remembered for his pioneer work in lamellar keratoplasty . In 1886 he grafted a full thickness cornea from a rabbit into the wikt lamella lamella r bed of a young female patient. At the Institute of Pathological Anatomy in Lund he wrote an important thesis titled Studien ber Kleinhirncysten. Bau, Pathogenese und Beziehungen zur Angiomatosae retinae , in which he described the relationship between cerebellum cerebellar cysts and their correlation to tumors angiomata of the retina . In 1926, Lindau was the first to describe a coherent link between the retinal, cerebellar and visceral components of a disease he called angiomatosis of the central nervous system . This disease is characterized by tumors of the retina and the brain, along with cysts of several visceral organs such as the kidneys , pancreas , and adrenal gland s. Lindau s research soon attracted the attention of famed neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing , who named the disorder, Lindau s disease . By 1964 the medical community had become more aware of early 20th century research on retinal angiomata conducted by ophthalmologist Eugen von Hippel , and today the disease is named after two men, being called Von Hippel Lindau disease .
