In mathematical analysis , Trudinger s theorem or the Trudinger inequality also sometimes called the Moser Trudinger inequality is a result of functional analysis on Sobolev space s. It is named after Neil Trudinger and J rgen Moser . It provides an inequality between a certain Sobolev space norm and an Orlicz space norm of a function. The inequality is a limiting case of Sobolev imbedding and can be stated as the following theorem Let math Omega math be a bounded domain in math mathbb R n math satisfying the cone condition . Let math mp n math and math p 1 math . Set math A t exp left t n n m right 1. math Then there exists the imbedding math W m,p Omega hookrightarrow L A Omega math where math L A Omega left u in M f Omega u A, Omega inf k 0 int Omega A left frac u x k right dx leq 1 right . math The space math L A Omega math is an example of an Orlicz space . The Lw w School of Mathematics lang pl Lwowska szko a matematyczna lang uk was a group of mathematician s who worked between the two World War s in Lviv , then known as Lw w and located in Poland , but now located in western Ukraine . The mathematicians often met at the famous Scottish Caf to discuss mathematical problems, and published in the journal Studia Mathematica , founded in 1929. The school was renowned for its productivity and its extensive contributions to subjects such as point set topology , set theory and functional analysis . The biographies and contributions of these mathematicians were documented in 1980 by their contemporary Kazimierz Kuratowski in his book A Half Century of Polish Mathematics Remembrances and Reflections . Many of the mathematicians, especially those of Jew ish background, fled this southeastern part of Poland in 1941 when it became clear that it would be invaded by Germany . Few of the mathematicians survived World War II , but after the war a group including some of the original community carried on their work in western Poland s Wroc aw , the successor city to prewar Lw w see Polish population transfers 1944 1946 . A number of the prewar mathematicians, prominent among them Stanis aw Ulam , became famous for work done in the West. Pomeranian Cavalry Brigade Polish Pomorska Brygada Kawalerii was a cavalry unit of the Polish Army in the interbellum period. It was created on April 1, 1937 out of the Cavalry Brigade Bydgoszcz . Its headquarters were stationed in Bydgoszcz and the brigade consisted of these units 2nd Regiment of Rokitno Chevau l gers, garrisoned in Starogard Gda ski Starogard , 16th Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans of General Gustaw Orlicz Dreszer , stationed in Bydgoszcz, 18th Regiment of Pomeranian Uhlans, stationed in Grudzi dz , 8th Regiment of Mounted Rifles, stationed in Che mno , 11th Regiment of Mounted Artillery, stationed in Bydgoszcz, 10th Squadron of Pioneers, stationed in Bydgoszcz, 8th Squadron of Communications, stationed in Bydgoszcz. Polish September Campaign The Brigade, under Colonel Adam Zakrzewski , was part of the Pomorze Army . On September 1, 1939, parts of the 18th Regiment of Pomeranian Uhlans made the legendary Battle of Krojanty charge at Krojanty , during which unit s commandant, Colonel Kazimierz Mastalerz was killed. On September 2, the Brigade was ordered to attack the town of Koronowo , which was defended by the German 3rd Armored Division of General Leo Geyr von Schweppenburg . This move was necessary, as it would help the withdrawing Polish 9th Infantry Division 9th Infantry Division , which had been engaged in bitter fighting. The cavalrymen, with heavy losses, managed to halt the Germans. However, at Bukowiec, wiecie County Bukowiec the Wehrmacht forces destroyed the 16th Regiment of Greater Poland Uhlans, soon afterwards the 18th Regiment of Pomeranian Uhlans shared same fate. The remaining forces managed to withdraw from the Battle of Tuchola Forest Tuchola Forest and on September 5, became part of the Operational Group of General Juliusz Drapella . After a few days, these units, together with Podolska Cavalry Brigade , took part in the Battle of Bzura . He is credited with discovering mathematician Stefan Banach , with whom he gave a notable contribution to functional analysis through the Banach Steinhaus theorem . After World War II Steinhaus played an important part in the establishment of the mathematics department at Wroc aw University and in the revival of Polish mathematics from the destruction of the war. Author of around 170 scientific articles and books, Steinhaus has left its legacy and contribution on many branches of mathematics, such as functional analysis, geometry , mathematical logic , and trigonometry .
