James Pembroke was born a slavery slave on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. When his owner died, he became the property of his son, Frisby Tilghman who moved to Rockland, Washington County, Maryland. There James learned the trades of brickmaker and blacksmith. On October 28, 1827 he ran from a job in Hagerstown, towards Petersburg now called York Springs , Pennsylvania . He changed his name to James W.C. Pennington and moved to New York in 1828. He settled in New Haven, Connecticut , and audited classes at Yale Divinity School from 1834 to 1839 becoming the first black man to attend classes at Yale. He was subsequently ordained and became a teacher, abolitionist, and author. He wrote The Origin and History of the Colored People in 1841, which has been called the first history of African Americans, and a slave narrative in 1849, The Fugitive Blacksmith . The screenplay by Bob Merrill is based on a memoir by Carlotta Monti , mistress of W.C. Fields for the last 14 years of his life. Synopsis The story begins in 1924 in New York City , where W.C. Fields is a Ziegfeld Follies headliner, and ends with his 1946 death in California at age 66. In between, it dramatizes his life and career with emphasis on the latter part of both, when the Me of the title played a prominent role, with a number of fiction alized events added for dramatic impact. Having lost his girlfriend Melody to another man and most of his life savings due to careless investments by his broker, Fields heads west to Santa Monica , where he operates a wax museum until he s offered a film role. He quickly becomes a major screen presence and a notorious drinker. While at a party with his friends John Barrymore , Gene Fowler and restaurant owner Chasen s Dave Chasen , Fields is introduced to starlet Carlotta Monti, whom he hires as a live in secretary . Child Ranch is a National Register of Historic Places National Registered Historic Place located south of East Helena, Montana . It was added to the Register on November 23, 1977. The placard reads blockquote Helena mining man W. C. Child initiated this ranch about 1885, as the White Face Farm stocked with some of the first purebred Herefords in Montana Territory. Then came the infamous Hard Winter of 1886 87, when deep snows and months of freezing temperatures followed drought years that had left feed sparse. Open range cattle herds were decimated. When spring arrived, Child built the massive fieldstone barn, 55 feet tall and 100 square feet on both lower level and loft, along with other stone outbuildings. The barn held stalls for 500 cattle and could store 350 tons of hay it is Montana s largest barn. Shortly after its construction came that of the octagonal ranch house, which runs 20 feet on a side. With his permanent residence in Helena, Child used the structure only for meetings and parties guests arrived via Child s personal railroad car. The house s entire second floor was an open ballroom. The Silver Panic of 1893 ruined Child financially, and he died that same year.
