Refimprove date April 2011 Founded in 1928 at the instigation of the insurance broker L on Eeckman and of the painters Anto Carte and Louis Buisseret , the Groupe Nervia was a Belgian artistic circle, the purpose of which was to foster Walloons Walloon art, obscured by the Flanders Flemish Expressionism of the Laethem Saint Martin School, by supporting young talented artists of Hainaut. It included, in addition to Anto Carte , eight other painters Louis Buisseret , Frans Depooter , L on Devos , L on Navez , Pierre Paulus , Rodolphe Strebelle , Taf Wallet and Jean Winance . Nervia s art claims a Latin essence and is more realistic, lyric and intimist than their northern neighbors . In addition to their obvious skills, Nervia s artists refused avant garde at all costs, deeply studied other artists, and expressed a sort of neo humanism through themes taken from everyday and family life, treated with harmony and idealism . Twenty exhibitions were organized between 1928 and 1938, together with other guest artists Andr e Bosquet , Gustave Camus , Alphonse Darville , lisabeth Ivanovsky , Geo Verbanck , Fernand W ry and Ernest Wynants . Nervia stood out at the Salon of Ghent in 1933 and 1938 and successfully participated in the first Congr s Culturel Wallon held in Charleroi . Seven other exhibitions were organized between 1946 and 1978, including an itinerant exhibition on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Group s creation. Due to the number of wars Spain was involved in during the early 18th century the country could not provide itself with enough soldiers for its own campaigns. This was also exacerbated by the severe loss of manpower as a result of a Plague disease plague epidemic. Diplomatic approaches were made to a number of countries with requests for the recruitment of mercenaries to fight for Spain. Germans, Italians and Walloons were recruited but the Spanish were particularly keen to engage Irishmen because of their reputation as soldiers. The Confederation of Kilkenny established licences for the recruitment of Irishmen to fight with the King of Spain. One remarkable facet of so many Irishmen fighting for opposing nations in Europe was that they occasionally faced each other as enemies on foreign battlefields. The Hibernia Regiment found itself in this position at the siege of Badajoz , in 1811, when they faced the Irish Legion under the command of the French.
