WalterByers born March 13, 1922 was the first executive director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He served from 1951 to 1988. He also helped start the United States Basketball Writers Association in 1956. The NCAA WalterByers Scholarship is named in his honor. Byers expanded the NCAA men s basketball tournament in 1951 to 16 teams, the first step in expanding the tournament to the spectacle it is today. The number of teams fluctuated over the next few decades, but never went below 16 again and eventually expanded further under Byers leadership. The tournament previously had just eight teams. Born in Los Angeles , Byers suffered from arthritis from a young age and was unable to continue his plans of a career as a pianist. He picked up trombone and played with Karl Kiffle before serving in the United States Army Army in 1944 45. In the second half of the 1940s he arranged and played trombone for Georgie Auld , Buddy Rich , Benny Goodman , Charlie Ventura , and Teddy Powell . Following this he composed for WMGM AM radio and television in New York . In the middle of the 1950s he was in Paris arranging for Ray Ventura he also led a session of his own at this time. He was the band s drummer from 2000 to 2004 replacing Matt Gingrich. Byers also filled in as the drummer for the Christian rock band Relient K for a short time in 2000. The band s former drummer, Stephen Cushman , had left the band earlier in the year. Byers now plays in a smaller band called Royal Empire Music , along with former Bleach band member Dave Baysinger. Byers also filled in on drums for Audio Adrenaline during their spring Feb Apr 2007 tour, which were the band s final shows.
