    The Weldon process is a process developed in 1866 by Walter Weldon for recovering manganese dioxide for re use in chlorine manufacture. Commercial operations started at the Gamble works in St. Helens in 1869. The process is describe in considerable detailed in the book, The Alkali Industry, by J.R. Partington,D.Sc. The common method to manufacture chlorine at the time, was to react manganese dioxide and related oxides with hydrochloric acid to give chlorine MnO sub 2 sub 4 HCl MnCl sub 2 sub Cl sub 2 sub 2H sub 2 sub O Weldon s contribution was to develop a process to recycle the manganese. The waste manganese II chloride solution is treated with lime, steam and oxygen, producing calcium manganite IV 2 MnCl sub 2 sub 3 Ca OH sub 2 sub O sub 2 sub Calcium oxide CaO · 2MnO sub 2 sub 3 H sub 2 sub O 2 CaCl sub 2 sub The resulting calcium manganite can be reacted with HCl as in related processes CaO· 2MnO sub 2 sub 10 HCl CaCl sub 2 sub 2 MnCl sub 2 sub Cl sub 2 sub 5 H sub 2 sub O The manganese II chloride can be recycled, while the calcium chloride is a waste byproduct. ref name undefined The Weldon process was first replaced by the Deacon process and later by the Chloralkali process . The story of Weldon s dismissal from James I of England King James court for his negative assessment of the Scots people Scots in A Description of Scotland , is usually taken as the justification for the criticism of James in The Court and Character of King James I . However, it is unclear whether Weldon was the author of either of these works. A Description of Scotland was first published six years before Weldon s dismissal from the court and was not accredited to him until the second half of the 17th century. Likewise The Court and Character of King James I was not accredited to Weldon until after his death in 1648. He did, however, support Parliament of England Parliament during the English Civil War , holding and administering the county of Kent .
