  1. Wapping Tunnel

About a tunnel in Liverpool the tunnel in London between Rotherhithe and Wapping Thames Tunnel refimprove date June 2011 Image WappingTunnelShaft.jpg thumb 250px A ventilation shaft for the Edge Hill Tunnel, situated on Blackburne Place, Liverpool Wapping or Edge Hill Tunnel in Liverpool , England , was constructed to enable goods services to operate between Liverpool docks and Manchester , and all points between, as part of the planned Liverpool and Manchester Railway . It was the first tunnel in the world to be bored under a metropolis. The tunnel is convert 6660 ft m m long, and runs downhill from Edge Hill, Merseyside Edge Hill cutting, near the Crown Street Station goods yard in the east of the city, to Park Lane railway goods station Park Lane Goods Station near Wapping Dock . It now passes beneath the Northern Line Merseyrail Merseyrail Northern Line approximately a quarter of a mile south of Central Station. The original proposal for the railway out of Liverpool ran north along the docks, but this route proved very unpopular with local landowners. The new route required considerable engineering works in addition to the tunnel. The 1 in 48 gradient was much too steep for the steam locomotives of the day. A stationary steam engine was installed at Edge Hill cutting in a short tunnel bored into the rock near the Moorish Arch to haul goods wagons by rope up from the Park Lane good station at the south end docks. The goods wagons were connected to locomotives at Edge Hill for the continuing journey to Manchester. The tunnel opened in 1830 and closed on 15 May 1972. Anarchism sidebar Image Steve Ignorant 1981.jpg framed right Crass lead singer Steve Ignorant performing at the Autonomy Centre in 1981 Wapping Autonomy Centre also known as The Anarchist Centre was a social centre set up in a rented former warehouse space in the Wapping area of London Docklands from late 1981 to 1982. The project was initially funded by money raised by the benefit single Persons Unknown Bloody Revolutions , as well as benefit gigs by Crass and The Poison Girls and other bands and events. Most of those involved with the project were anarchists who participated in protests and direct action against targets such as vivisection laboratories, the meat industry and the policies of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher . During its short life, the Autonomy Centre became an important focal point for the anarchist punk movement in the UK and Europe. Anarcho punk bands such as Crass , Zounds and Flux of Pink Indians played live at the building and a large, informal anarchist support network grew up in partnership with other communities in London. Unfortunately, the centre s open door policy also attracted a large number of drug users, petty criminals and unwanted police attention. These factors, combined with problems finding the monthly rent, ultimately led to its closure. Many of those involved with the centre went on to become active at the Centro Iberico , a squatting squat ted project with similar aims and ethos in west London. January 2006 The Prospect of Whitby is a historic public house on the banks of the river Thames Thames at Wapping in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets . It lays claim to being the site of the oldest riverside tavern , dating from around 1520. It was formerly known as the Devil s Tavern , on account of its dubious reputation. Before that it was officially called The Pelican . All that remains from the building s earliest period is the 400 year old stone floor. In former times it was a meeting place for sailor s, smuggler s, cut throats and footpad s. Hugh Willoughby sea captain Sir Hugh Willoughby sailed from here in 1533 in a disastrous attempt to discover the North East Passage to China . In the 17th century, it became the hostelry of choice of Hanging Judge Jeffreys , scourge of the Monmouth Rebellion . He lived nearby and a noose hangs by a window, commemorating his custom. He was chased by anti Royalists into the nearby Town of Ramsgate , captured and taken to the Tower of London Tower for his own safety. Opened in 1849, its eastern portal is adjacent to Edge Hill station . The western end opens into a short cutting, between Byrom Street and Fontenoy Street, the short Waterloo Tunnel exits the cutting terminating at Waterloo Dock. The Victoria and Waterloo tunnel are effectively one long tunnel with a ventilation cutting. The whole length is generally known as the Waterloo Tunnel. The tunnel closed on 19 November 1972. A single set of rails still enters the tunnel for a short distance at Edge Hill, used by freight locomotives during shunting manoeuvres. Citation needed date September 2008 Reuse for Merseyrail The Victoria Tunnel was considered as an addition to Merseyrail in 1975, to link the city centre to the east of Liverpool . However, the tunnel was rejected in favour of the Wapping Tunnel . At Liverpool Central railway station Liverpool Central station , spur works were built to enable a tunnelled connection to the Wapping Tunnel creating a route to Edge Hill railway station and the Canada Dock Branch . This plan would have included the reopening of stations such as Breck Road railway station as part of the Merseyrail system. Budget cuts prevented further work. In May 2007 it was reported that Merseytravel Chief Executive Neil Scales had prepared a report outlining the possibilities for reuse of the Victoria and Wapping Tunnel Wapping tunnels. ref name ic2 cite web url http icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk 0100news 0100regionalnews tm method full 26objectid 19218055 26siteid 50061 name page.html title Plan to reopen railway tunnels publisher icLiverpool first Larry last Nield date 2007 05 30 accessdate 2008 09 10 ref Merseytravel safeguard the tunnel for future use. ref http www.liverpool.gov.uk Images tcm21 170943.pdf ref Furthe ...   more details
