The War of the Thuringen Succession German th ringisch hessische Erbfolgekrieg 1247 1264 was a military battle over a successor to the last Landgrave of Thuringia in present day Germany . Source of the conflict With the death of the childless Landgrave Henry Raspe, Landgrave of Thuringia Henry Raspe in 1247 , the Ludowingian line of Thuringian landgraves became extinct in the male line. His property included not only large parts of Thuringia , but also the Countship of Hesse had come into Ludowingian possession through the female line. In 1122, before his acquisition of the title of Landgrave, Louis I, Landgrave of Thuringia Count Louis I of Thuringia had married Hedwig of Gudensberg, the female heir of the Hessian countly family of the Gisonens. The Gisonens, whose lands were initially mainly in the upper Lahn, had previously come into the significant inheritance of Count Werner in Lower Hesse . Then, through the marriage of Giso IV with Kunigunde of Bilstein, they had also acquired widespread property and vogtship rights from the Counts of Bilstein. Claims on the Ludowinger inheritance were made by Henry Raspe s niece and his nephew. Sophie of Thuringia, Duchess of Brabant Sophie of Thuringia , married to Henry II, Duke of Brabant and Lothier , was the daughter of Henry Raspe s brother Ludwig IV of Thuringia Ludwig IV and claimed the territories on behalf of her son Henry I of Hesse Henry . The L neburg War of Succession lang de L neburger Erbfolgekrieg was a conflict that broke out in 1370 in north Germany and lasted, with interruptions, for 18 years. The war was over the line of succession to the Principality of L neburg . Due to a serious illness in 1388, possibly a result of poisoning, one of the combatants could no longer prosecute the war, and hostilities ended. Background After William II, Duke of Brunswick L neburg William II of L neburg died in 1369 without a male heir, the Old House of L neburg died out. In accordance with the rules of the House of Welf and William s wishes, Magnus Torquatus of Brunswick Magnus II was the rightful heir. Noref date August 2009 The War of the Succession of Flanders and Hainault was a series of feudal conflicts in the mid thirteenth century between the children of Margaret II, Countess of Flanders . They concerned the succession to the two counties, the first a fief of the King of France and the latter of the King of Germany . Origins When Baldwin I of Constantinople Baldwin IX , Count of Flanders and Count of Hainault Hainault , left on the Fourth Crusade in 1202, he left his western domains under his eldest daughter Jeanne, Countess of Flanders Joanna . Joanna inherited the counties on Baldwin s death and, despite two marriages, died without heirs in 1244. She was succeeded by her younger sister, the aforementioned Margaret. Margaret s first marriage, to Bouchard of Avesnes , was broken in 1221 per orders from Joanna and the excommunication of Bouchard. By Bouchard, however, she had already had three children, including John I of Avesnes . Nevertheless in 1223, Margaret remarried with William II of Dampierre d.1231 , who likewise gave three offspring, including William III of Dampierre William III and Guy of Dampierre . The rights to Margaret s inheritance between the sons of Avesnes and those of Dampierre were the cause of the conflicts known as the war of the succession of Flanders and Hainault. First conflict The first conflict opened with Margaret s succession in 1244. John I of Avesnes and William of Dampierre, half brothers, fought between themselves until Louis IX of France King Louis IX intervened in 1246. Marava War of Succession is used to refer to the war of succession between Bhavani Shankar , the illegitimate son of Raghunatha Kilavan and Tanda Teva , the heir designated by the deceased king, Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi , for the throne of Ramnad kingdom , also known as the Kingdom of the Marava . The war of succession and the ensuing civil war lasted from 1720 to 1729 and resulted in the partitioning of the Ramnad kingdom reducing its power and influence. Prelude Raghunatha Kilavan , the founder of the Kingdom of Ramnad, died in 1710. He was an excellent soldier and his death left behind a huge void. Prior to his death, Kilavan had first nominated his illegitimate son, Bhavani Shankar and later, due to protests from the people, chose his younger son, Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi to succeed him. Bhavani Shankar abided by the king s decision but an uneasy calm prevailed throughout Ramnad. Events Bhavani Shankar eventually revolted in 1720 and securing the help of the Thanjavur Maratha kingdom Thanjavur Maratha king Serfoji I and the Pudukkottai state Raja of Pudukkottai , invaded Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi s seat at Aranthangi . While defending the city, Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi fell victim to plague and died. Just before his death, Vijayaraghunatha Sethupathi nominated Tanda Deva , a great grandson of Raghunatha Kilavan s father to succeed him but before he could acceded to the throne, Bhavani Shankar overthrew him with the support and influence of one of Kilavan s concubines. Tanda Deva secured the support of the Madurai Nayak king and the Raja of Pudukkottai who had switched sides and invaded Aranthani forcing Bhavani Shankar to flee to Thanjavur . But, Bhavani Shankar won over the Thanjavur Maratha ruler promising him Aranthangi in return and defeated the combined armies of Ramnad, Madurai and Pudukkottai within two or three months.
