He studied at the Odessa Conservatory under Louis Brassin and Sophie Menter , and became professor of piano at Moscow Conservatory in 1897. He eventually moved to Leipzig and finally settled in Munich . He toured with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky in Germany , France and England . At his debut in Hamburg in 1888, he played Tchaikovsky s Piano Concerto No. 1 Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor with the composer conducting. De Basil was born Vassily Grigorievich Voskresensky in Kaunas , Lithuania his year of birth is given variously as 1880 or 1886.     Phalanx was an association of artists formed in Munich in 1901 who were opposed to old fashioned and conservative viewpoints in art. Founding members were Wassily Kandinsky , Rolf Niczky , Waldemar Hecker , and Wilhelm H sgen . Kandinsky was elected president of the association and also became the director of the Phalanx School of Painting. The association organized twelve exhibitions between 1901 and 1904 which in addition to those of its members, featured works by Claude Monet , Jugendstil Art Nouveau artists, Symbolists and Post Impressionism Post Impressionist artists Paul Signac , Felix Vallotton and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec . Phalanx was where Kandinsky met Gabriele M nter , an art student at the school. She was to become his pupil, intimate companion, and critic until they separated in 1914.
