  1. Watermarking attack

In cryptography, a watermarking attack is an attack on disk encryption methods where the presence of a specially crafted piece of data e.g., a decoy file can be detected by an attacker without knowing the encryption key cryptography key . Problem description Disk encryption suites generally operate on data in 512 byte cylinder head sector sector s which are individually encrypted and decrypted. These 512 byte sectors alone can use any block cipher mode of operation typically Cipher Block Chaining CBC , but since arbitrary sectors in the middle of the disk need to be accessible individually, they cannot depend on the contents of their preceding succeeding sectors. Thus, with CBC, each sector has to have its own initialization vector IV . If these IVs are predictable by an attacker and the filesystem reliably starts file content at the same offset to the start of each sector, and files are likely to be largely contiguous , then there is a chosen plaintext attack which can reveal the existence of encrypted data, as follows. The problem is analogous to that of using block ciphers in the block cipher modes of operation Electronic codebook ECB electronic codebook ECB mode, but instead of whole blocks, only the first block in different sectors are identical. The problem can be relatively easily eliminated by making the IVs unpredictable with, for example, ESSIV . ref cite web last Fruhwirth first Clemens title Linux hard disk encryption settings url http clemens.endorphin.org LinuxHDEncSettings accessdate 2006 01 02 ref Alternatively, one can use modes of operation specifically designed for disk encryption see disk encryption theory . 1. Audio watermark detection

Confusing date November 2009 Watermarking is the process of embedding information into a signal e.g. audio, video or pictures in a way that is difficult to remove. If the signal is copied, then the information is also carried in the copy. A signal may carry several different watermarks at the same time. Watermarking become more and more important to enable copyright protection and ownership verification. One of the most secure techniques of audio Digital watermarking watermarking is spread spectrum audio watermarking SSW . Spread Spectrum is a general technique for embedding watermarks that can be implemented in any transform domain or in the time domain. In SSW, a narrow band signal is transmitted over a much larger bandwidth such that the signal energy presented in any signal frequency is undetectable. So basically a watermark is spread over many frequency bins so that the energy in one bin is very small and certainly undetectable. An interesting feature of this watermarking technique is that destroying such a watermark requires noise of high amplitude to be added to all frequency bins. This type of watermarking is robust since to be confident of eliminating a watermark, an attack must attack all possible frequency bins with modifications of certain strength. This will create visible defects in the data. Spreading spectrum is done by a pseudonoise PN sequence. In conventional SSW approaches, the receiver must know the PN sequence used at the transmitter as well as the location of the watermark in watermarked signal for detecting hidden information. This method is attributed high security features, since any unauthorized user who does not access this information cannot detect any hidden information. Detection of the PN sequence is the key factor for detection of hidden information from SSW. Although PN sequence detection is possible by using heuristic approaches such as evolutionary ... 1. Copy attack

distinguish Replay attack The copy attack is an attack on certain digital watermarking systems proposed by M. Kutter, S. Voloshynovskiy, and A. Herrige in a paper presented in January, 2000 at the Photonics West SPIE convention. ref M. Kutter, S. Voloshynovskiy, and A. Herrigel. The Watermark Copy Attack. Proceedings of the SPIE, Security and Watermarking of Multimedia Contents II, Volume 3971, pages 371 379. San Jose, CA, 2000. ref In some scenarios, a digital watermark is added to a piece of Computer media media such as an image , film , or audio clip , to prove its authenticity. If a piece of media were presented and found to lack a watermark, it would be considered suspect. Alternatively, a security system could be devised which would limit a user s ability to manipulate any piece of media which contained a watermark. For instance, a DVD burner may prohibit making copies of a film which contained a watermark. The copy attack attempts to thwart the effectiveness of such systems by estimating the watermark given in an originally watermarked piece of media, and then adding that watermark to an un watermarked piece. In the first scenario listed above, this would allow an attacker to have an inauthentic image be declared authentic, since it contains a watermark. In the second scenario, an attacker could flood the market with content which ordinarily would allow a user to manipulate it as he saw fit, but due to the presence of the watermark, limitations would be imposed. In this way, schemes which sought to limit use of watermarked media may prove to be too unpopular for wide distribution. 1. Dotfuscator

unreferenced date November 2011 notability date December 2011 Dotfuscator is software used for obfuscation of .NET assemblies. Among its abilities are mangling of identifier names into unreadable characters, but also changing control flow into being more unreadable at the IL level for a human and other relatively advanced changes. Note that name mangling interferes with reflection and whenever it is an issue, identifiers that are used with e.g. Windows Forms or Windows Presentation Foundation WPF data binding have to be manually excluded. Control flow changes are designed in such a way that the Just in time compilation JIT compiler is able to unravel them and produce identical code. They re not known to introduce performance issues.
