  1. The Weavers (play)

Expand German Die Weber date March 2011 The Weavers is a play written by the German playwright Gerhart Hauptmann in 1892. Plot summary Most of the characters are proletarians struggling for their rights. Unlike most plays of any period, as pointed out many times in literature criticism and introductions, the play has no true central character, providing ample opportunities for ensemble acting. Production history The Weavers has been staged on Broadway once, in 1915 1916. ref http ibdb.com production.php?id 8241 ref Criticism Barrett H. Clark s comments as one of Gerhart Hauptmann s experiments in dramatic form, The Weavers is highly significant. Instead of a hero, he has created a mob this mob is therefore the protagonist or chief character and if individuals emerge from the rank and file they are not thrust into the foreground to stay long. It is the weavers as a class that are ever before us, and the unity of the play is in them and in them alone they are only parts of a larger picture which will take shape as the story advances, and are not intended to be taken as important individuals. ref Barrett H. By the early 1970s the site employed 2,500 people and was the world s largest producer of Axminster woven carpets and Europe s largest producer of tufted printed carpets. The company was bought by its management and the Associated Weavers International Group was created. In 1990 the company acquired Prado , which was founded in 1909 as Tissage Van de Wiele . In 1997 the company registered on the Brussels Stock Exchange. In 1998 the company expanded into the Czech Republic and in 2001 it took over the France French company, Balsan. 1. Weavers Green

Weavers Green was a United Kingdom British television soap opera , made in 1966 for ITV by Anglia Television . It was notable for being one of the first television programmes to be shot on location using videotape and outside broadcast equipment, rather than film , as had usually been the case for non studio shooting up until this point. The series dealt with life in a small country town and provided an early TV role for Kate O Mara as a student vet, a far cry from her later TV bitch characters. It has been claimed that the series was axed partially because Anglia was one of ITV s smaller companies, with relatively little power within network negotiations some have claimed that a lingering resentment over this was the reason why Anglia was still showing Emmerdale Farm out of peaktime after all other regions had moved it into the peak hours also, Anglia may have resented the fact that Yorkshire Television , makers of that series, had replaced it as the company broadcasting from the Belmont transmitting station . ref http www.transdiffusion.org emc behindthescreens about.php http www.transdiffusion.org emc behindthescreens images btslogo.gif ref 49 half hour episodes were produced, all written by Peter Lambda Peter and Betty Lambda . 1. Shuttle (weaving)

Image Shuttle with bobin.jpg thumb Shuttle with bobbin 100px A shuttle is a tool designed to neatly and compactly store weft yarn while weaving . Shuttles are thrown or passed back and forth through the shed weaving shed , between the yarn threads of the warp weaving warp in order to weave in the weft. The simplest shuttles, known as stick shuttles , are made from a flat, narrow piece of wood with notches on the ends to hold the weft yarn. More complicated shuttles incorporate bobbin s or pirn s. Image StickShuttle.jpg thumb right Large stick shuttle left 100px Shuttles are often made of wood from the Flowering Dogwood , because it is so hard, resists splintering, and can be polished to a very smooth finish. Originally shuttles were passed back and forth by hand. However, John Kay flying shuttle John Kay invented a loom in 1733 that incorporated a flying shuttle . This shuttle could be thrown through the warp, which allowed much wider cloth to be woven much more quickly and made the development of machine looms much simpler. References Chandler, Deborah 1995 .
