The UNIFAC Consortium has been founded at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg at the chair of industrial chemistry of Prof. J rgen Gmehling Gmehling to invite private companies to support the further development of the group contribution method s UNIFAC and its successor modified UNIFAC Dortmund . Both models are used for the prediction of thermodynamic properties, especially the estimation of phase equilibria. The UNIFAC consortium is a successful example of private sponsorship of a public university in Germany. History The consortium was founded in 1997 when the public financing of the further development of the models became unlikely. The models UNIFAC and mod. UNIFAC Dortmund have already been used widely in software for the process simulation simulation and synthesis of chemical processes. Many companies doing process development in the field of chemical engineering had announced their support for a new way to subsidize the further development. This is facilitated through the support of over 40 companies, and is particularly aided by the DDBST GmbH, which supplies the complete Dortmund Data Bank DDB and several software tools for free. The DDB, a factual data bank for Thermodynamics thermodynamic data, especially phase equilibrium data, is the main source for the work of the consortium. Image Onco.logo.jpg thumbnail right Oncofertility Consortium Logo The Oncofertility Consortium is a multi institutional project to assess the impact of cancer and its treatment on reproductive health. The term oncofertility refers to a new interdisciplinary field that bridges oncology and women s health research for the purpose of exploring and expanding options for the reproductive future of cancer patients. The term was coined in 2006 by Dr. Teresa Woodruff, at the Feinberg School of Medicine Northwestern University . Woodruff is the Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Feinberg. History Cancer research has blossomed significantly since the signing of the National Cancer Act in 1971. With greater support for clinical and basic science research in cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment, which was conducted by the newly developed National Cancer Institute NCI , cancer survival rates rose rapidly. Currently, 75 of pediatric cancer patients survive. Thus, support for the NCI and its affiliates has greatly improved the quality of life for a large number of cancer patients. However, despite new hope for survival, many men, women, and children diagnosed with cancer experience impaired reproductive function as a result of the rigorous therapies they undergo as part of their cancer treatment and, thus, face unique challenges in planning their lives after cancer. Research The development of Oncofertility has been expedited in response to the increasing number of cancer survivors facing infertility after cancer treatment. To support the initiative to understand the risk of cancer therapies to reproductive health and to develop fertility preserving options ... into the social considerations of fertility after cancer today. Multiple issues orphan February 2009 jargon February 2010 NOTOC The RNAi Consortium , or TRC, is a public private partnership whose mission is to create libraries of small hairpin RNA s shRNAs for 15 000 human and 15 000 mouse gene s. These libraries should help the scientific community to analyse gene function by RNAi . The consortium is based at the Broad Institute of the MIT and Harvard University , and includes 6 MIT and Harvard associated institutions and 5 international life sciences organizations. Verified RNAi clones and entire libraries are made available both by Sigma Aldrich and Open Biosystems . Hairpin selection A set of candidate hairpins are selected based on the 1st Refseq transcription genetics transcript from each National Center for Biotechnology Information NCBI gene. They should be 21mers, be at least 25bp from start of the coding sequence and no closer than 150bp from its end. Candidates are scored based on various Empirical method empirical rules see the Broad Institute s web site for a complete list http www.broad.mit.edu genome bio trc rules.html and then BLAST ed against 2 transcriptome sets. Hairpins that are unique for a Unigene cluster and a RefSeq NM identifier are preferred. Lastly, the candidates are spaced to have 1 hairpin in the 3 UTR 3 untranslated region and 4 in the coding sequence. Hairpin vector Selected hairpins are cloned into the viral vector vector pLKO1, which is a multipurpose plasmid that can be propagated in bacteria , transfection transfect ed into mammal ian cell line s or used for generation of lentivirus es.
