  1. Bench (weight training)

Unreferenced date June 2007 Image WeightBenchSide.jpg thumb Typical consumer level weight bench with leg exercise attachment File Two weight training benches.jpg thumb Two weight training benches in a fitness center in N rnberg, Germany A weight training bench is a piece of equipment that has a resemblance to a bench furniture normal e.g. park bench , but is designed for use in weight training . Weight training benches may be of various designs fixed horizontal, fixed inclined, fixed in a folded position, with one adjustable portion, with two or more adjustable portions, with racks to hold bars, etc. In the limit, the definition of a bench blurs into that of combinations that mix a bench and associated equipment. Benches are manufactured by many different vendors, in an array of qualities, features, and prices. Alternatives Though the weight bench seems to define weight training for modern audiences, benches are not strictly necessary for many, if not most, exercises that typically use them. For example, seated presses may be done while standing. In recent years, many home fitness enthusiasts have begun incorporating a swiss ball into their workouts in place of a traditional bench, since it is both more space efficient and requires engagement of the core abdominal muscles. This substitution is not without criticism, since it can be difficult to maintain form and balance when lifting more than one s own body weight. Before the invention of the weight bench the common way to work the chest was to lie on the floor and do what was known as the floor or supine press. 1. Weight machine

Unreferenced date December 2009 A weight machine is an exercise machine used for weight training that uses gravity as the primary source of resistance and a combination of simple machine s to convey that resistance to the person using the machine. Each of the simple machines pulley, lever, wheel, incline changes the mechanical advantage of the overall machine relative to the weight. Stack machines Image WeightStack.JPG thumb 175px The weight stack from a cable machine each plate weighs 6  kg . A stack machine &mdash also called a stack or rack &mdash has a set of massive rectangular plates that are pierced by a vertical bar which has holes drilled in it to accept a pin. Each of the plates has a channel on its underside or a hole through the middle, as shown in the diagram that aligns with one of the holes. When the pin is inserted through the channel into the hole, all of the plates above the pin rest upon it, and are lifted when the bar rises. The plates below do not rise. This allows the same machine to provide several levels of resistance over the same range of motion with an adjustment that requires very little force to accomplish in itself. The means of lifting the bar varies. Some machines have a roller at the top of the bar that sits on a lever. When the lever is raised the bar can go up and the roller moves along the lever, allowing the bar to stay vertical. This reduces the exclusion of smaller athletes in sports where physical size gives a significant advantage. Weight classes are used in a variety of sports, especially combat sports such as boxing , wrestling , and mixed martial arts . The existence of weight divisions gives rise to the practice of weight cutting .
