  1. Welsh Not

The Welsh Not or Welsh Note was a punishment system used in some Wales Welsh schools in the late 19th and early 20th century to dissuade children from speaking Welsh language Welsh . It was represented as a piece of wood, inscribed with the letters WN , that was hung around the necks of children who spoke Welsh during the school day. The not was given to any child overheard speaking Welsh, who would pass it to a different child if they were overheard speaking Welsh. By the end of the day, the wearer of the not would be given a corporal punishment lashing . The idea of the not was to discourage pupils from speaking Welsh, at a time when English language English was considered by some to be the only suitable medium of instruction . History The use of the not was recorded in the 18th century it was also commonly known as the cwstom , the Welsh stick and the Welsh lead a lump of lead . ref The Welsh Academy Encyclopedia of Wales. Cardiff University of Wales Press 2006 ref The practice was mentioned in the 1847 Treachery of the Blue Books Reports of the commissioners of enquiry into the state of education in Wales . Though highly critical of many aspects of Welsh culture , some of the inspectors commented on the existence of the practice of using nots as being arbitrary and cruel. The report did not endorse the practice. The reports also clearly show that the vast majority of education in Welsh Wales was still conducted in Welsh. 1. Integral nationalism

Unreferenced date July 2010 Integral nationalism is one of five types of nationalism defined by Carlton Hayes in his 1928 book The Historical Evolution of Modern Nationalism. More recently, Peter Alter discussed integral nationalism in his book Nationalism , along with its opposite, risorgimento nationalism . Whereas risorgimento nationalism applies to a nation seeking to establish a state for example, Greece , Italy , Germany , Poland and Serbia in the 17th century , integral nationalism results after a nation has achieved independence and has established a state. Nazi Germany and fascism fascist Italy, according to Alter, were examples of integral nationalism. Some of the qualities that characterise integral nationalism are anti individualism , statism , radical extremism, right wing ideology, and aggressive expansionist militarism. Integral states are totalitarian and the government or state dominates all aspects of society. Integral nationalism is derived from the nationalisme integral of the French nationalist author Charles Maurras , who stated A true nationalist places his country above everything . Integralism as such is a belief that society is an organic unit, with a social hierarchy and co operation between the different social classes . It often overlaps with fascism , Citation needed date July 2010 although many natural points of disagreement exist. 1. Expansionist nationalism

Refimprove date March 2008 Expansionist nationalism is an aggressive and radical form of nationalism that incorporates autonomous, patriotic sentiments with a belief in expansionism . The term was coined during the late nineteenth century as European powers indulged in the Scramble for Africa in the name of national glory, but has been most associated with militarist governments during the 20th century including Nazi Germany and the Japanese empire . The American notion of Manifest Destiny is also oft cited as an example. Ideology What distinguishes expansionist nationalism from liberal nationalism is its acceptance of chauvinism , a belief in superiority or dominance. Nations are thus not thought to be equal to their right to self determination rather some nations are believed to possess characteristics or qualities that make them superior to others. Expansionist nationalism therefore asserts the state s right to increase its borders at the expense of its neighbours. 1. Lebanese nationalism

Lebanese nationalism is a nationalistic ideology that considers the Lebanese people , particularly Maronites , distinguished nation independent from the Arab nation. It considers Lebanese sometimes a Phoenicia n and sometimes a Syriacs Syriac people. This ideology has its roots in the 19th century sectarian wars in Mount Lebanon between the Maronites and Druze . It took its formalized form during the inter war period and the French Mandate of Syria , when it served primarily as a tool in opposing Arab nationalism and in justifying the existence of the nascent country of Lebanon . During the 20th century and the Lebanese Civil War , Lebanese nationalism was associated with the Kataeb Party and the secularist movement Guardians of the Cedars .
