It is believed by artists and fans that power ballads first came into existence in the 1970s at the insistence of record company executives who may have coerced their signed hard rock and Heavy metal music heavy metal bands to include a powerful ballad on an album, reasoning that the power ballad would attract a larger listening audience than the bands typical music. By the mid 1980s, hard rock and Heavy metal music heavy metal bands routinely released power ballads in an effort to cross over to Top 40 radio. Simon Frith identifies the origins of the power ballad in the emotional singing of soul artists, particularly Ray Charles and the adaptation of this style by figures such as Eric Burdon , Tom Jones singer Tom Jones and Joe Cocker to produce slow tempo songs often building to a loud and emotive chorus backed by drums, electric guitars and sometimes choirs. The name of the music is not an accurate description because Guangdong music is not the only music of the whole Guangdong area. In Guangdong, there are numerous traditional genres of music such as Teochew music and Hakka music Hakka Hanyue and sixian . The name of the music originated in the 1920 and 1930s when the music was popular in Shanghai ballrooms in the form of Spiritual Music wikt , J ngsh n Y nyu more properly translated as spirited music . As the performers were almost entirely from Guangdong, Shanghai people generalized the form of music as Guangdong music. Musically, compositions are based on tunes derived from Yueju Cantonese opera , together with new compositions from the 1920s onwards. Some pieces have influences from jazz and Western music, using syncopation and triple time, and incorporating instruments such as the saxophone , violin , guitar , piano , drum set , or xylophone .
