These tradesmen made wheels for carts and wagons by first constructing the hub, the spokes and the rim fellows segments, and assembling them all into a unit working from the center of the wheel outwards. Most wheels were made from wood , but other materials have been used, such as bone and horn anatomy horn , for decorative or other purposes. Around the middle of the 19th century, iron strakes were replaced by a solid iron tyre custom made by a blacksmith , who first measured each wheel to ensure proper fit. Strakes were lengths of iron that were nailed to the outside of wheels to hold wooden wheels together. It is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was founded in 1937 by Mary Cabot Wheelwright, who came from Boston , and Hosteen Klah Hastiin Klah , a Navajo people Navajo singer and medicine man . History Wheelwright and Klah were introduced in 1921 and quickly became close friends. It was not long before they determined to create a permanent record of Klah s and other singers ritual knowledge. Klah dictated and Wheelwright recorded the Navajo Creation Story and other great narratives that form the basis of Navajo religion. While Wheelwright concentrated on the spoken word in Navajo ritual, Frances Franc Newcomb focused on the sandpainting s that are created and destroyed during healing ceremonies, recreating versions of them in tempera on paper. Klah participated in yet another way he was a weaver, and his huge tapestries were also permanent records of sandpaintings. By the early 1930s, it was clear to Wheelwright and Klah that a museum would be necessary to realize their goals.     Horace William Wheelwright 5 January 1815 16 November 1865 was an England English hunting hunter , natural history naturalist and writer who spent many years of his life in Australia and Sweden . Wheelwright was born at Tansor , Northamptonshire . He was educated at Reading Grammar School and then studied law , practising as an Lawyer attorney 1843 1846 at Thrapston , Northamptonshire. He later travelled extensively through northern Europe, especially Norway and Sweden. About 1852, at the time of the Victorian gold rush , Wheelwright migrated to Australia. Unsuccessful at the diggings, he became a professional game shooter to supply the Melbourne, Victoria Melbourne market. The book he subsequently wrote about his Australian experiences, Bush Wanderings of a Naturalist , is an important source of information about the natural history of the area around Melbourne in the 1850s. Wheelwright eventually left Australia in the late 1850s to return to Europe, settling in G rdsj , in the province of V rmland , near Karlstad, Sweden . He died in London following a fall in the street, which aggravated a longstanding hernia condition, and the subsequent operation.
