He was the third son of Robert Whetstone d. 1557 , a member of a wealthy family that owned the manor of Walcot at Barnack , near Stamford, England Stamford , Lincolnshire . George appears to have had a small inheritance which he soon spent, and he complains bitterly of the failure of a lawsuit to recover a further inheritance of which he had been unjustly deprived. In 1572 he joined an English regiment on active service in the Low Countries , where he met George Gascoigne and Thomas Churchyard . Gascoigne was his guest at Walcot when he died in 1577, and Whetstone commemorated his friend in a long elegy . Whetstone Gulf State Park is a state park located in Lewis County, New York Lewis County , New York in the United States USA . The park is on the border of the towns of Turin town , New York Turin and Martinsburg, New York Martinsburg . The park is on the edge of the Tug Hill Plateau , south of Lowville village , New York Lowville . The park is built in and around a three mile long canyon cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. The site is probably one of the most spectacular scenic vistas east of the Rocky Mountains. The park has 56 wooded campsites, a scenic picnic area along Whetstone Creek, a man made swimming area and trails for hiking and cross country skiing, one of which circles the gorge. Above the gorge is Whetstone Reservoir, stocked with tiger muskie and large mouth bass for fishermen. The east end of the park is located by New York State Route 26 . The park offers a beach, a playground, picnic tables and pavilions, hiking, fishing, a campground with tent and trailer sites, cross country skiing and snowmobiling.
