It is located at the south western end of the Menai Straits , about two miles south west of Caernarfon . Several rivers flow into the bay and there are large areas of mudflat s and salt marsh . A shingle spit landform spit partly blocks the mouth of the bay. At the north western end is Fort Belan , built during the 18th century. The bay has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and in 1994 it became a Local Nature Reserve because of its importance for wildlife. Southlake Moor forms part of the extensive grazing marsh and ditch system of Somerset Levels and Moors. Southlake Moor is unusual in that, when conditions in the River Parrett are suitable, it may be deliberately flooded in winter by means of a sluice in the river floodbank. Some 96 species of aquatic and bankside vascular plant species have been recorded from Southlake Moor, of particular interest is the Sium latifolium Greater water parsnip Sium latifolium . When the moor is flooded, large numbers of wildfowl may be present with up to 22,000 Eurasian Wigeon Wigeon Anas penelope , 250 Bewick s Swan Cygnus bewickii and good numbers of Common Pochard Pochard Aythya ferina , Common Teal Teal Anas crecca and Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula . Regular signs of the Otter Lutra lutra are to be seen on the muddy banks of the River Parrett. For the town in Rhondda Cynon Taff, South Wales Ynyshir Ynys hir RSPB reserve is a nature reserve of the RSPB situated beside the River Dyfi Dyfi estuary in Ceredigion , Mid Wales between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth . The reserve covers 550 hectares and includes a variety of habitats extending inland from mudflat s and salt marsh through farmland and pools to oak woodland and hillside scrub. Facilities include a small visitor centre and seven bird hide hides . The name means long island in Welsh language Welsh referring to a wooded ridge which was once surrounded by marshland. The area was a private estate until it was bought by the RSPB and became a reserve in 1970. Breeding birds include important numbers of wader s such as Northern Lapwing Lapwing and Common Redshank Redshank . Little Egret s have recently joined Grey Heron s in the heronry. The woodlands hold Common Redstart Redstart , Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher while Red Kite s frequently pass overhead. South Swale Local Nature Reserve gbmapping TR060648 is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Ramsar Site between Faversham and Whitstable in southeast England . It consists of convert 428 ha 0 of the North Kent Marshes on the south bank of The Swale and along Faversham Creek. It is important for its plants and as a wintering site for wildfowl and waders.
