A Turlough lake turlough is a seasonal lake which usually dries up in summer. Glenamaddy Turlough lies alongside the R362 road R362 regional road in the outskirts of the town, and there is a car park and viewing area on the lake shore. The town of Glenamaddy is reputed to get its name from the shape of the lake in winter, which is said to resemble a dog. Wildlife Many thousands of waterfowl come here each winter for food and shelter. Most numerous are the Eurasian Golden Plover Golden Plover , which can be seen wheeling about in huge flocks. The White fronted Goose Greenland White fronted goose also comes but they number only 70 100 each winter. They breed in Greenland and over half their world population winters in Ireland . More than 200 Whooper swan s also spend the winter in Glenamaddy these are unlike the common swan which resides in Ireland all year. The site is also of ornithological interest, with over 1 of the wintering wigeon being populated within the site. Alder Alnus glutinosa and willow Salix species are part of the open water. The site is also home to a scrub of Crataegus monogyna . A large jetty juts into the water and a few hundred yards away there is a water treatment building. The reservoir was originally created by damming the River Cuckmere , which previously meandered to the middle of the present day reservoir. The Cuckmere is now channelled in a straight line just to the east. Local wildlife At the northwest banks of the reservoir is the Osprey Birdhide, and this is the best place to see the population of cormorants which regularly come to sit on the banks and trees surrounding water. Other species include great crested grebe , barn swallow swallow , mallard , pied wagtail , coot , Canada goose , Rook bird rook , and sheep graze in the surrounding water meadows.     The Shannon Callows are areas of flat land along the shores of the River Shannon between Athlone where the river flows out of Lough Ree and Portumna where it enters Lough Derg Shannon Lough Derg in central Republic of Ireland Ireland . The shallow grade of the river here results in occasional flooding of the Callows. Protection The Callows are a classified as a Special Area of Conservation SAC . The Irish Wildlife Trust have a reserve on Bullock Island. The nature reserve in this embayment internationally important for Pink footed Goose Pink footed Geese , Red Knot and Common Redshank and is nationally important for Common Shelduck , Wigeon and Common Eider Ducks. It is also popular with Mute Swan s, Oystercatcher s and Northern Lapwing s as well as smaller birds. Breeding birds are preyed on by Peregrine Falcon s and Eurasian Sparrowhawk Sparrowhawk s. The visitor centre, run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust , is accessible from the A92 road . The swans give the Basin its old, more poetic name, the Sea of Swans . Citation needed date January 2011 The Montrose Basin Heritage Society was formed in 1999 to bring together information about the basin, including its history and archaeology. The Basin has been exploited for its seafood, at one time Montrose was Scotland s second largest exporter of salmon and mussel cultivation gave it the largest mussel beds in the kingdom during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Eel s have also been an important catch. The Montrose Basin was hit by a tsunami in 6100 BC, generated by the massive underwater Storegga Slide , in Norway . It is located to the east of the Cotentin peninsula just off the coast near Saint Vaast la Hougue . It is almost uninhabited, and is usually reached by amphibious boat although, being a tidal island , it is also possible at low tide to walk there over the local oyster beds. Access to the island is limited to 500 visitors per day. History Tatihou, like many of the islets of the Channel Islands contains the hou suffix. In 1692 the naval Battle of La Hougue took place between the English and the French close to the island of Tatihou. In 1756 the surroundings of La Hougue were defended by many batteries and forts, but the lack of regular maintenance ensured that these quickly fell into disrepair. In 1720 Tatihou was used for Quarantine quarantining plague victims from Marseilles . On 10 December 1803, the 36 gun frigate HMS Shannon 1803 HMS Shannon grounded on Tatihou. All her crew survived to be captured by troops from a battery. The next day a party from HMS Merlin 1803 HMS Merlin burned Shannon to prevent her arms and stores falling into French hands. The hours are selected according to the tides to allow the festival goers home. The island also hosts music courses several times a year. Flora and fauna An ornithological reserve was founded in 1990 with an area of 30,000 square metres. The island is a stopping place for many migrating birds, including the European Herring Gull Herring Gull , Great Black backed Gull , Common Shelduck , Little Egret , Eider , Wigeon , Yellow legged Gull .
