William T. Francis November 28, 1869 July 15, 1929 was an African American lawyer , politician , and diplomat from Minnesota . Francis was originally from Indianapolis, Indiana , but relocated to Minnesota at an early age. He enrolled at William Mitchell College of Law then the St. Paul College of Law in 1901 and earned his degree in 1904. Afterward, he served in the legal department of the Northern Pacific Railway . Francis opened his own law firm prior to World War I in Saint Paul, Minnesota St. Paul . In 1920, he was president elector at the Republican State Convention. Francis and his wife were instrumental in shepherding an anti lynching law through the Minnesota Legislature in 1921. In 1927, he was appointed U. S. Minister to Liberia by President Calvin Coolidge . William Douglas Francis 6 March 1889 2 January 1959 was a notable Australia n botany botanist . Born in Bega, New South Wales , at the age of 17 he moved with his father Alfred, and brother Frederick, from Wollongong, New South Wales , where he attended Wollongong Superior Public School, to Kin Kin, Queensland . It was here that he was able to satisfy his strong interest in natural history while helping his father and brother on the farm. In 1919 he was appointed Assistant Government Botanist at the Queensland Herbarium . By 1950 he was appointed Government Botanist. He retired in 1954 and died five years later. He contributed enormously to the classification and identification of Australian rainforest species and is probably best remembered for his book Australian Rainforest Trees . First published in 1929, it has since gone through numerous reprints. WilliamFrancis Strudwick c. 1765&ndash 1812 was a United States House of Representatives U.S. Congressman from the state of North Carolina between 1796 and 1797. Strudwick, born at Stag Park, near Wilmington, North Carolina about 1765, was a farmer with a limited education. In 1789, he was a delegate to the state constitutional convention he also served in the North Carolina Senate in 1792 and 1793. In 1796, Strudwick was elected as a United States Federalist Party to the 4th United States Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Rep. Absalom Tatom , and served from November 28, 1796 to March 3, 1797. In 1801, he joined the North Carolina House of Representatives , where he served until 1803. WilliamFrancis Allen September 5, 1830 &ndash December 9, 1889 was an United States American classical scholar and an editor of the first book of American slave songs. Allen was born in Northborough, Massachusetts in 1830. He graduated Harvard College in 1851 later he traveled and studied in Europe. A Unitarianism Unitarian , he considered the ministry before deciding to pursue a literary and scholarly career. In 1856, he became assistant principal at the English and Classical School in West Newton, Massachusetts. In 1863 4, during the American Civil War Civil War , he and his wife, Mary Lambert Allen, ran a school for free negro newly emancipated slaves on the Sea Islands of South Carolina in 1864 5, he worked as a sanitary agent among black war refugees in Arkansas . After the war, he taught at Antioch College , and in 1867, he became professor of ancient languages and history afterwards Latin language and Ancient Rome Roman history at the University of Wisconsin Madison . He died in December 1889. He wrote prolifically for journals and magazines. His contributions to classical studies chiefly consist of schoolbooks published in the Allen his brother and Greenough series. The Slave Songs of the United States 1867 , of which he was joint editor, was inspired by his work among the freedmen and the first book of its kind ever published.
