His expedition in 1872 found the first indications of the Palmer River goldfield. He was born in Wiltshire , England , on 26 February 1837. Fellow explorer Frank Hann was his younger brother. The first gold was found by Frederick Warner the expedition s surveying surveyor on 6 August and further deposits were located on following days. However Hann thought they were not in commercial quantity as a result James Venture Mulligan who in 1873 followed up Hann s report and announced richer deposits is credited with the discovery. Julius Ferdinand von Hann 23 March 1839 Linz &ndash 1 October 1921 Vienna was an Austria n meteorology meteorologist . He is seen as the father of modern meteorology. Biography He was educated at the Gymnasium school gymnasium of Kremsm nster and then studied mathematics , chemistry and physics at the University of Vienna . From 1865 to 1868, he was master at the Oberrealschule at Linz, and in 1865 was appointed editor of the Zeitschrift f r Meteorologie . In 1877, he became director of the Meteorologische Zentralanstalt Central Institute for Meteorology and professor of meteorology at the University of Vienna. In 1897, he became professor of meteorology at the University of Graz , but returned to Vienna to fill the chair of professor of cosmic physics in 1900, where he remained until 1910. In 1912, he was made a foreign knight of the Prussia n Ordre Pour le M rite .
