    William Hawkins 1673 1746 was a barrister and serjeant at law , best known for his work on the English criminal law , Hawkins Treatise of Pleas of the Crown Treatise of Pleas of the Crown . He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from St John s College, Cambridge in 1689, and earned a Master of Arts Oxbridge and Dublin Master of Arts from the same college in 1693. ref So the DNB , but this is regarded as mistaken by Venn id HWKS686W name Hawkins, William ref He was admitted a member of the Inner Temple on 10 February 1700 or possibly 24 November 1701, as two persons of his name appear in the record books . He became a serjeant at law on 1 February 1723. Among his clients was Thomas Bambridge , the notoriously cruel warden of Fleet Prison . In addition to his Treatise of Pleas of the Crown , he also published an abridgment of the first part of Edward Coke s Institutes of the Lawes of England in 1711. This work ran through many editions, and was praised by William Blackstone Blackstone in the Commentaries on the Laws of England .     other people William Abbott unreferenced date June 2008 William Hawkins Abbott October 27, 1819 January 8, 1901 was a noted producer of petroleum who also built the first oil refinery . He was also engaged in a variety of other business activities. Abbott was born in Middlebury, Connecticut , and became a clerk in the general store in Watertown, Connecticut , circa 1837 to 1844. He entered the general merchandise business himself in 1845, and married Jane Wheeler in September of that same year. He continued in the mercantile business, becoming interested in the petroleum business later on. He was one of the first people involved in the oil trade, and the refinery he built in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1861 was the first petroleum refinery. In 1862 he moved to Titusville himself, and there established the first retail coal business. He also established the first oil pipeline consolidation and revived interest in the Union & Titusville Railroad Co, which he reopened in 1871.     William Hawkins Polk 1815 1862 was an United States American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives for the 6th congressional district of Tennessee . He was the brother of President James Polk , who had represented the same district when he had served in the United States Congress . Biography William H. Polk was born in Maury County, Tennessee , on May 24, 1815. He attended the city schools of Columbia, Tennessee Columbia , and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of North Carolina in 1832 and 1833. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee Knoxville , studied law, was admitted to the bar association bar in 1839, and commenced practice in Columbia. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1842 to 1845. He served as America s ambassadors from the United States Minister to the Two Sicilies Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in present day Italy from March 13, 1845 to August 31, 1847. He served as major of the Third Dragoons in the Mexican American War in 1847 and 1848.
