He represented Kent Ontario electoral district Kent in the Canadian House of Commons from 1882 to 1887 as a Conservative Party of Canada historical Conservative member. He was born in Chatham, Ontario Chatham , Upper Canada , the son of William B. Smyth, a native of Ireland , and was educated there and at the Caradoc Academy. In 1862, he married Julia O Brien. Smyth served as school trustee, town councillor, deputy reeve and reeve he was also mayor of Chatham from 1869 to 1870 and in 1876. His election in 1882 was overturned in 1883 after an appeal Smyth won the by election held in 1884. He was unsuccessful when he ran for reelection in 1887 and 1888.     Sir William Smyth, 1st Baronet c 1616 1696 was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1679. He supported the Cavaliers Royalist cause in the English Civil War . Smyth was the son of Robert Smyth of Buckingham and Akeley and his wife Martha. He matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford on 13 March 1635 aged 18, but left without taking a degree. In 1641, he was elected Member of Parliament for Winchelsea UK Parliament constituency Winchelsea in the Long Parliament . He was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1641. He supported the King in the Civil War and was governor of Chepstow Castle . He was created DCL at Oxford on 10 November 1642. He was disabled from sitting in parliament on 16 January 1644.
