Life and work He was born in Liverpool , England , was initially taught art by William Daniels painter William Daniels 1813 1880 , then went on to study at the Liverpool Academy of Arts Liverpool Academy . On a visit to London in 1850 he became converted to the Pre Raphaelite style. He exhibited his new style of painting with the work Broughty Wa s Burd Helen at the Royal Academy , London in 1856. The picture caught the eye of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and John Ruskin which helped establish Windus as a respected artist. His first painting was oil on canvas titled Black Boy , 1844. He entered Glasgow Theological Academy under Ralph Wardlaw in September 1827, but in December of the same year he left to become classical tutor at the Blackburn Theological Academy, afterwards the Lancashire Independent College , in north west England. He stayed at Blackburn until 1831, lecturing on biblical literature, metaphysics , Greek language Greek and Latin . After short visits to Germany and London , he was invited back to Edinburgh in November 1834 to become minister of North College Street church afterwards Argyle Square , an independent church which had arisen in 1802 out of the evangelical movement associated with the Haldane brothers, Robert Haldane Robert and james Haldane James . White grew up in Emporia, Kansas , went to the nearby University of Kansas, and then transferred to and graduated from Harvard College . After completing his course of studies at Harvard, he succeeded his father as editor of The Emporia Gazette upon his father s death. Among White s most noteworthy books are They Were Expendable and Lost Boundaries . Early life WilliamLindsay White was the only son of William Allen and Sallie White, born in Emporia on June 17, 1900. W. L., or Bill, had a younger sister, Mary, who was killed in a horse riding accident at the age of 16 in May 1921. Editor White groomed his only surviving child for work in journalism, hoping for his son to take the reins of The Emporia Gazette one day.
