He represented Norfolk South Canadian electoral district Norfolk South in the Canadian House of Commons from 1872 to 1882 as a Conservative Party of Canada historical Conservative member. He was born near Galston, Ayrshire , Scotland, the son of John Wallace, and came to Canada around 1840. Wallace settled at Simcoe, Ontario and established a newspaper there, the British Canadian , as well as operating a printing business. He also opened a bookstore and occupied various posts associated with railways. Wallace served on the school board for Simcoe and also served as reeve, mayor and as a member of the council for Norfolk County, Ontario Norfolk County . In 1852, he married Mary Ann Kent. He did not run in the 1874 .... Wallace was defeated in 1882. History The pub is named after WilliamWallace Sir WilliamWallace , the famous 13th century knight and Scottish patriot , although the reasons for choosing the name are not known. The close proximity to Mort s Dock and later Balmain Colliery ensured early patronage. The pub is now frequented by locals to whom it is affectionately known as the Willie Wallace or Willie Wallie . A mural depicting pub life, complete with regular patrons, was painted on an internal wall in 1995. The mural contains an image of actor Mel Gibson who provided perhaps the best known account of the life of WilliamWallace in the 1995 film Braveheart . A signed poster from the film also hangs on the wall in the main bar. Architecture The pub is a heritage listed building of local significance built in the Victorian Australian Architectural Styles Filligree Filligree style. It is a two storeyed corner hotel with a panelled lace upper verandah, timber posts to street and iron lace ballustrades. After a few years of local schooling he entered in 1882 the University of Michigan to study civil engineering, graduating Bachelor of Science in 1886. Whilst at university he developed his interest in astronomy. After graduating he was appointed Professor of Mathematics at the University of Colorado but soon moved back to Michigan as an instructor in astronomy. In 1891 he was invited to work on spectroscopy at Lick Observatory in California. Campbell was a pioneer of astronomical spectroscopy and catalogued the radial velocities of stars. He spent 15 years as a lawyer in private practice in Syracuse before serving as List of mayors of Syracuse, New York mayor of that city in 1873 74. In 1874, President of the United States President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Wallace as a judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York . He was educated at St Andrews University and Balliol College, Oxford , where he went as an exhibitioner in 1864. In 1872 he was elected a fellow of Merton College, Oxford and, in 1882, succeeded Thomas Hill Green as White s Professor of Moral Philosophy . sfn Chisholm 1911 His brusque and sarcastic manner earned him the nickname the Dorian .
