Electric hoist controller s have replaced proper winding engines in modern mining , but use electric motor s that are also traditionally referred to as winding engines . Early winding engines were hand, or more usually horse powered. File Foerdermaschine 01.JPG thumb Winding drum, with depth indicator to the left The first powered winding engines were stationary steam engine s. The demand for winding engines was one factor that drove James Watt to develop his rotative beam engine , with its ability to continuously turn a winding drum, rather than the early reciprocating beam engine s that were only useful for working pumping engine pump s. They differ from most other stationary steam engines in that, like a steam locomotive , they need to be able to stop frequently and also reverse. This requires more complex valve gear and other controls than are needed on engines used in Mill factory mill s or to drive pump s. Orphan date March 2011 In power engineering , winding factor is what makes the rms generated voltage in a three phase AC electrical generator become lesser. This is because the Armature electrical engineering armature winding of each phase is distributed in a number of slots. Since the Electromagnetic field emf induced in different slots are not in phase, their phasor sum is less than their numerical sum. This reduction factor is called distribution factor K sub d sub . Another factor that can reduce the winding factor is when the slot pitch is smaller than the pole pitch, called pitch factor K sub p sub . The winding factor can be calculated as K sub w sub K sub d sub K sub p sub . Most of the three phase machines have winding factor values between 0.85 and 0.95. With the free online winding editor from http www.eme.ee.kth.se emetor emetor.php Emetor , it is possible to determine the fundamental winding factor as well as the winding factor space harmonics for different winding arrangements as a function of the number of slots and number of poles of the winding. File Kreuzwickelspule.png thumb Basket winding made with Litz wire in an IF transformer. Basket winding or basket weave winding or honeycomb winding is a pattern of winding electrical wire in a coil, used in making certain types of electronic component s, such as inductor s and transformer s. The purpose of this type of winding is to minimize having adjacent turns of wire running parallel. In a basket winding the wires in successive layers of the coil cross each other at large angles, as close to 90 degrees as possible. At high frequencies, such a winding has lower values of parasitic capacitance , and less electrical resistance due to Proximity effect electromagnetism proximity effect , as compared with an ordinary winding with the same number of turns. However, the physical dimensions are greater which leads to higher leakage inductance . Basket winding is employed in coils used at high frequency high frequencies , particularly radio frequency radio frequencies . As the frequency of the electric current through a coil of wire increases, the coil has higher resistance and capacitive reactance , resulting in energy losses. In tuned circuit s the increased resistance can reduce the Q factor of the circuit, increasing the Bandwidth signal processing bandwidth . The parasitic capacitance can cause the coil to become self resonant frequency self resonant . Basket wound coils have lower values of these undesirable characteristics, and so are used in radio equipment, such as radio receiver s. Basket windings are often wound with a Litz wire , or a wire insulated with cotton or silk. This type of insulation is also important from a mechanical point of view during the winding process, because a common enamelled magnet wire would not provide sufficient surface friction to hold the subsequent ... index.html ref See also Ayrton Perry winding External links http info.ee.surrey.ac.uk Workshop advice coils winders wave index.html Photo and description of basket winding References reflist Category ... more details

Winding sticks are used in woodworking to help in flattening boards, usually when the task is undertaken with a hand plane . Winding sticks are basically two short lengths of timber or some other flat and stable material. Any pieces of timber of a suitable size and straightness may be used, although many woodworkers will make one or more matching pairs for the purpose. Contrasting woods are often used to improve the ability to discern differences in height and level between the two sticks. The sticks are used in pairs, with one stick placed flat and perpendicular to the length of the board at each end. The woodworker then sights across the top of the two sticks. If the surface on which the sticks are sitting is flat, the edges of the two sticks will line up perfectly with each other, if not, the discrepancy will indicate any warping or high spots that may exist. The process is often repeated by moving the sticks to different positions along the length of the board to check the full length of the board. Adjustments to the surface of the board are made with a hand plane or other method of wood removal and the process described above is repeated until the board is satisfactorily flat. History Because the width of a canal channel about thirty to forty feet is less than the length of a full size canal boat it is not usually possible to turn a boat in the canal. Winding holes are typically indentations in the off side non towpath side of the canal, allowing sufficient space to turn the boat. One unverified suggestion for the derivation of the name winding hole comes from the fact that the winding hole is on the off side of the canal. When horses were used to pull the boats, it was not possible for them to assist with the turning of the boat, due to being on the wrong side of the canal. As a result it was considered favourable to use the wind to assist in turning the boat, to reduce the amount of human power needed. It was Lanegan s first solo work, and is notable in its departure from the characteristic sound of Screaming Trees , the band he fronted from 1985 until 2000. While the work done in that group was much more energetic and fit into the burgeoning grunge genre of the late 80s early 90s, The Winding Sheet has a much more stripped down sound, defining Lanegan s solo work largely for the rest of the decade.
