File The frieze of the Leith Corn Exchange 3 geograph.org.uk 542032.jpg thumb right Wool staplers at work br The frieze of the Leith Corn Exchange A wool stapler is a dealer in wool . The wool stapler buys wool from the producer, sorts and grades it, and sells it on to manufacturers. The expression wool stapler fell out of use during the 20th century, see the external link below. Staple in this particular context means a market. Prior to the 17th century The Staple Staple was also a particular type of market, a place appointed by royal authority, in which a body of merchants had exclusive right of purchase of certain goods destined for export . The now best known English staple was at Calais but in medieval times there were, at various times, many others throughout the kingdoms of England and Ireland and the facing coast of the Low Countries all involved, though not exclusively, with the English wool trade. The importance of wool to the English economy can be shown by the fact that since the 14th Century, the presiding officer of the House of Lords has sat on the Woolsack , a chair stuffed with wool. Boiled wool is a special type of fabric primarily used in beret s, scarf scarves , vest s, cardigan sweater cardigan s, Coat clothing coat s and jacket s. It is created using a mechanical knitting process which involves a set pattern that is then shrunk. It can also be a woven fabric which is shrunk, compressing the fibres together. Origins Wool felt and felted wool are similar to boiled wool, all of these processes date back to at least the Middle Ages . The word felt itself comes from West Germanic feltaz . ref http www.etymonline.com index.php?term felt ref Process Wool felt can be created commercially and results in uniform fabric thickness. This dense wool is created by first weaving wool to create an item then washing it, resulting in a solid, dense fabric that is about 30 smaller than the original woven material. This process is called fulling , as opposed to felting, which is a non woven fabric. Boiled wool is produced industrially and is characteristically found in Tyrolean textiles of Austria and of South America . Very large woven sheets of wool fabric are first either dyed or not, with a design on them. These are boiled and shrunk without using any chemicals. Because of this and other factors, boiled wool is a tight knit fabric, very warm, windproof and usually does not itch. Orphan date February 2009 The term wool alien is used for any plant species whose occurrence at a particular site is due to its having been transported there as a result of the making of wool products, the most common process being that the seed of this plant will have become attached to a sheep or other wool producing animal, the animal shorn and the raw wool transported to a mill where it is refined, and the impurities discarded, including the seed, which then successfully germinates. Typical sites where wool aliens are found are waste ground near woollen mills, but wool cleanings have also been used as soil conditioners in orchards and fields, and such species have been found there too.
