The American Amputee HockeyAssociation AAHA is a non profit sports organization founded in 2000 to develop opportunities for amputee and other disabled athletes to learn and play competitive hockey. The AAHA is a member of the Disabled Hockey Section of USA Hockey and is working to promote a fun and safe environment for the growth of hockey in the United States and to lead the international effort to make Standing Amputee Hockey a Winter Paralympic Sport. Amputee Hockey is identical to typical amateur ice hockey , with the notable exception that the athletes are missing one or more of their upper or lower extremities. Competing with other amputees helps to increase self esteem through participation in a fast paced, exciting sport on a level playing field , the hockey rink. The NOHA is sanctioned by the Ontario Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada . The major league run by the NOHA is the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League of the Canadian Junior A Hockey League . There used to be a Junior B league called the North of Superior Junior B Hockey League , but it went defunct in 2004. There was also a NOHA Jr. B League, but it became the NOJHL in 1978. The International Junior B Hockey League existed for many years as well. The NOHA was founded in 1919 and that same year became affiliated with the Ontario HockeyAssociation . Decades later, that affiliation was broken but both now operate under the Ontario Hockey Federation . The association was formed in 1914 at a meeting at the Chateau Laurier hotel in Ottawa , Ontario , Canada of the Allan Cup trustees. The trustees of the Cup were not able to keep up with the organization of the annual Allan Cup tournament and the issues of inter league play. It was formed with the goal of facilitating the Allan Cup, but eventually took over the role of providing teams to play in international tournaments and the Olympic Games . The CAHA also became Memorial Cup trustees in 1919, a role that lasted until the trophy became entrusted to the Canadian Hockey League in 1985.
