multiple issues disputed May 2008 POV May 2008 unreferenced July 2008 optical disc authoring Packet writing or IPW original term Incremental Packet Writing , is an optical disc recording technology used to allow write once and rewritable CD and DVD media to be used in a similar manner to a floppy disk from within the operating system , i.e., it allows users to create, modify, and delete files and directories on demand without the need to optical disc authoring burn a whole disc. Packet writing technology achieves this by writing data in incremental blocks rather than in a single block. The most common file system for packet writing systems is the Universal Disk Format UDF format. Deleting files and directories of a CD R using packet writing technology does not recover the space occupied by these objects but are simply marked as being deleted. Similarly, changes to files cause new instances to be created instead of replacing the original files. Because of this, the available space on a medium using packet writing technology will slowly diminish every time its content is modified. For rewritable discs, however, this doesn t necessarily occur there exists technology that allows them to be used as truly removable storage media, fully and freely writable see Universal Disk Format UDF . Due to the characteristics of optical rewritable media such as CD RW s and DVD RW s, the ability of data sectors to hold their contents wear out by changing them frequently since re crystallized alloy de crystallizes . To cope with this the packet writing system can remap bad sectors with good sectors as required. These bad sectors cannot be recovered by formatting the media. Some asemic writing includes pictograms or ideograms , the meanings of which are sometimes, but not always, suggested by their shapes. Asemic writing, at times, exists as a conception or shadow of conventional writing practices. Reflecting writing, but not completely existing as a traditional writing system, asemic writing seeks to make the reader hover in a state between reading and looking. Asemic writing has no verbal sense, though it may have clear textual sense. Through its formatting and structure, asemic writing may suggest a type of document and, thereby, suggest a meaning. The form of art is still writing, often calligraphic in form, and either depends on a reader s sense and knowledge of writing systems for it to make sense, or can be understood through aesthetic intuition. Asemic writing can also be seen as a relative perception, whereby unknown languages and forgotten scripts provide templates and platforms for new modes of expression. 1. Structured writing

Structured writing is a form of technical writing that uses and creates structured document s. The term was coined by Robert E. Horn and became a central part of his Information Mapping method of analyzing, organizing, and displaying knowledge in print and in the new online presentation of text and graphics. Horn and colleagues identified dozens of common documentation types, then analyzed them into structural components called information blocks. They identified over 200 common block types. These were assembled into information types using information maps. The seven most common information types were concept, procedure, process, principle, fact, structure, and classification. These types are loosely related to the three basic information types in Darwin Information Typing Architecture concept, task, and reference. An Information Mapping procedure is a set of steps for a person. A process is a set of steps for a system. Both resemble the DITA task. DITA topics are assembled into documents using DITA maps. This further requires both a definition of collective and texts , where collective means a connected group of individuals and texts are inscribed symbols chained together to achieve a larger meaning than isolated symbols.
