  1. Wulfnoth Cild

Wulfnoth Cild died c. 1014 was a South Saxon thegn who is regarded by historians as the probable father of Godwin, Earl of Wessex , and thus the grandfather of King Harold Godwinson . It is known that Godwin s father was called Wulfnoth, and in the view of Frank Barlow historian Frank Barlow , the Godwin family s massive estates in Sussex are indisputable evidence that the Wulfnoth in question was the South Saxon thegn. ref Frank Barlow, The Godwins , Pearson, 2002, p. 25. ref In 1008, King thelred the Unready ordered the construction of a fleet, and the following year 300 ships assembled at Sandwich in Kent to meet a threatened Viking invasion. There Brihtric, brother of Eadric Streona , brought unknown charges against Wulfnoth before the king, unjustly according to John of Worcester . ref name Williams http www.oxforddnb.com view article 10887 Ann Williams, Godwine , Oxford Online DNB, 2004 ref Wulfnoth then fled with twenty ships and ravaged the south coast. Brihtric followed with eighty, but his fleet was driven ashore by a storm and burnt by Wulfnoth. After the loss of a third of the fleet the remaining ships were withdrawn to London, and the Vikings were able to invade Kent unopposed. thelred almost certainly confiscated Wulfnoth s property as a result. ref Barlow, op. cit., pp. 26 27 ref ref Anglo Saxon Chronicle MSS C, D, E and F s.a. 1009. ref Wulfnoth Cild died by June 1014. ref Barlow, op. cit., pp. 27 ref He is one of the major characters in Justin Hill s novel, Shieldwall ... was founded by an Anglo Saxon nobleman named Wulfnoth, who may be the same as Wulfnoth Cild of Sussex ... http www.pase.ac.uk jsp DisplayPerson.jsp?personKey 11855 contribution Wulfnoth 9 Male Cild South Saxon ... 1. Wulfnoth Godwinson

Unreferenced date June 2007 Wulfnoth Godwinson 1040 1094 was a younger brother of Harold II of England , the sixth son of Earl Godwin Godwin . He was given as a hostage to Edward the Confessor in 1051 as assurance of Godwin s good behaviour and support during the confrontation between the earl and the king which led to the exile of Godwin and his other sons. Upon Godwin s return to England at the head of an army a year later, following extensive preparations in Ireland and Flanders, Norman supporters of King Edward, and especially Archbishop Robert of Jumieges, fled England. It is likely at this point that Wulfnoth and Hakon, son of Svein Godwinson, Godwin s eldest son were spirited away by the fleeing archbishop, and taken to Normandy, where they were handed over to William I of England Duke William of Normandy . According to Eadmer Eadmer s Historia novorum in Anglia , the reason for Harold s excursion to Normandy in 1064 or 1065 was that he wished to free Wulfnoth as well as his nephew Hakon. To this end he took with him a vast amount of wealth, all of which was confiscated by Count ... to the English crown, one of the promises made by William in return, according to Eadmer, was that Wulfnoth ... broke this alleged agreement and Wulfnoth was never released. for people named Childe Childe surname In the Middle Ages , a childe or child nowiki nowiki Old English Cild Young Lord was the son of a nobleman who had not yet attained knighthood , or had not yet won his spurs. 1. Ealhhelm

Ealhhelm floruit 940&ndash 955 was an Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxon nobleman and ealdorman in Mercia of West Saxon origins. It was in the reign of Edmund I of England Edmund , circa 940, that Ealhhelm was appointed as an ealdorman. He shared authority in Mercia with others, including thelstan Rota , thelmund, and another thelstan. The division is presumed to have been on a geographical basis. Ealhhelm and his family appear to have been connected with south western Mercia, the former kingdom of the Hwicce , which corresponded approximately with the boundaries of the Anglican Diocese of Worcester diocese of Worcester . Ealhhelm may have held the lands formerly belonging to Evesham Abbey as these are said to have been seized by one Alchelmus in the time of King Edmund. A kinsman of Ealhhelm named Wulfric&mdash probably the father of Ealhhelm s daughter in law&mdash who later received part of the Evesham lands, may be identified with the brother of Saint Dunstan . Ealhhelm ceases to sign charters around 951 in the reign of King Eadred of England Eadred . The date of his death is not recorded. lfhere, Ealdorman of Mercia lfhere and lfheah, the sons of Ealhhelm, were ealdormen and significant figures later in the 10th century.
