Yan began his career as a general serving under the warlord Liu Zhang warlord Liu Zhang of Yi Province. In fiction In Luo Guanzhong s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms , YanYan was defeated captured by Zhang Fei in 212 in one of the battles during Liu Bei s takeover of Yi Province . Yan firmly refused to surrender and made strong accusations at Liu Bei , which angered Zhang Fei. Zhang wanted to have him executed but changed his mind later as he was impressed with Yan s strong sense of loyalty. Zhang released Yan and succeeded in persuading Yan to join Liu Bei s forces. It comes in a package with two compartments. Yan Yuan zh c p Y n Yu n w Yen Yuan 1635 1704 , Chinese style name zi Yizhi or Hunran , Chinese style name hao Xizhai zh c p X zh i w Hsi chai founded the practical school of Confucianism to contrast with the more ethereal Neo Confucianism that had been popular in China for the previous six centuries. Like the Han learning scholars, he rejected the abstract metaphysics of the Neo Confucians. However, he considered Han learning as too obsessed with philology and textual criticism and not enough emphasis on pragmatism. His school promoted the Six Arts . He was born on April 27, 1635 in the Zhili province now called Hebei in China and spent his youth in poverty, after his father was taken into the Manchu army and never returned. He died on September 30, 1704 in the same province. Ideas of Yan Yuan were developed by his disciple Li Gong zh Yan Li school . Yan s intellectual heritage was addressed by Wu Han in the 20th c.
