It formed some 230,000 years ago, in a large eruption that deposited the approximately 100  km sup 3 sup Kaingaroa Ignimbrite s. It contains three rhyolite rhyolitic lava dome s Deer Hill, Kairuru and Pukekahu and the active Reporoa geothermal field. The Wai O Tapu Waiotapu geothermal area lies just north of the caldera rim, while the Broadlands thermal area lies to the south. The Waikato River runs through the southern half of the caldera. In April 2005, a large hydrothermal explosion occurred in a cattle cow field agriculture paddock within the caldera, creating a 50 metre crater. In 1994 it, along with nearby Vulcan volcano Vulcan erupted and devastated Rabaul, however, due to planning for such a catastrophe, the townsfolk were prepared and only five people were killed. The central file and data storage resource, called GLADE, will consist of file system servers and storage devices that will be linked to the supercomputer systems and eventually provide 16.42 petabytes of usable disk space.
