In Norse mythology , M tsognir Old Norse battle roarer ref The prefix M t means battle , the affix sognir means roarer ref is the father of the Norse dwarves Dwarves , and resides in Nidavellir Old Norse dark fields . Origin M tsognir is the creation of Odin and his brothers, Vili and V , who fashioned him out of Ymir s blood and bones in the form of a maggot . These sir later gave him a roughly humanoid appearance and a human like intelligence, which the rest of the dvergar later inherited. This interpretation of the origin of the dvergar is given in Snorri Sturluson s Prose Edda Gylfaginning 14 , and is quite disputed. In Norse mythology , liv gar Ice Waves are rivers that existed in Ginnungagap at the beginning of the world. The Prose Edda relates The streams called Ice waves, those which were so long come from the fountain heads that the yeasty venom upon them had hardened like the slag that runs out of the fire, these then became ice and when the ice halted and ceased to run, then it froze over above. But the drizzling rain that rose from the venom congealed to Rime frost rime , and the rime increased, frost over frost, each over the other, even into Ginnungagap, the Yawning Void. Gylfaginning 5, http northvegr.org lore prose 017020.php Brodeur s translation The eleven rivers traditionally associated with the liv gar include the Sv l, Gunnthr , Fj rm, Fimbulthul, Sl d, Hr d, Sylgr, Ylgr, V d, Leiptr and Gj ll which flows closest to the gate of Hel realm Hel and is spanned by the bridge Gjallarbr , although many other additional rivers are mentioned by name in both Eddas. The liv gar also figure in the origin of Ymir , the first J tunn giant . According to Vafthr dnism l , Ymir was formed from the poison that dripped from the rivers. In Gylfaginning , Snorri Sturluson Sturluson expands upon this notion considerably. As quoted above, when the venomous yeast from the liv gar froze to ice and overspread its banks it fell as rain through the mild air of Ginnungagap. The rime, infused with the cold of Niflheim from which the liv gar find their source in the wellspring Hvergelmir , began to fill the void. It then combined with the life giving fire and heat of Muspelheim , melting and dripping and giving form to Ymir, progenitor of the rime giants or frost giants. Elsewhere in Gylfaginning it is stated that so many serpents are in Hvergelmir with N dh gg that no tongue can tell them . These serpents are presumably the source of the venom or poison referred to in the myth. V lusp hin skamma , V lusp the Less or the Short V lusp , is an Old Norse poem which survives as a handful of stanzas in Hyndlulj , in the Poetic Edda , and as one stanza in the Gylfaginning section of Snorri Sturluson s Prose Edda . In his translation of Hyndlulj , Henry Adams Bellows comments that the preserved fragment of V lusp hin skamma shows that it was a late and very inferior imitation of the great V lusp Voluspo , and he dates it to the twelfth century. He further suggests that its appearance in Hyndlulj is due to the blunder of a copyist who confused the two poems, and he does not consider them to be of any great value either as poetry or as mythology.
