Drowai Gonpo aGro bai mgon po 1508 1548 was a king who wielded power in parts of Central Tibet from 1524 to 1548. He belonged to the Phagmodrupa dynasty which reigned over Tibet or parts of it from 1354 to the early 17th century. br br Drowai Gonpo was a son of the ruler Ngawang Tashi Drakpa d. 1564 , the last important leader of the dynasty and known by the Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso Fifth Dalai Lama as the King of Tibet . ref Giuseppe Tucci , Tibetan Painted Scrolls . This style of Tibetan thangka painting is called tsal thang with gold on a vermilion ground. The figure of Yutog Yontan Gonpo is often portrayed surrounded by the five buddhas above, the eight Medicine Goddesses at the sides, his special yidam Black Hayagriva accompanied by four goddesses below. The protector Mahakala Shanglon Dorje Dradul typically placed at the bottom center is accompanied by eight fearsome wrathful protector deities with one face and two or four hands, each riding a vahana . Four of the retinue figures ride atop wild animal or zombie mounts and each of those has nine heads. The portrait depicts a clean shaven Gonpo as he stretches the right arm forward across the knee in the mudra of generosity while holding the stem of a pink lotus flower blossoming over the shoulder supporting the wisdom book attribute wisdom book and sword attribute sword . Zugne is a village in Bumthang District in central Bhutan , located south of Jakar and east of Gyetsa on the Chume River in the Chume Valley. The village is noted for its weavers with scarves tied to their heads in the Bumthang District Bumthang style. They weave woolen yatra s on pedal looms and also make belts. Early life Pachen Dolma was born around 1933 in Gonjo , Kham, Eastern Tibet . She was the only child of Chieftain elder son Pomda Gonor of the Lemdha clan. Her father had a younger brother, Pomda Yonten. Pomda yonten had a daughter, Tashi Choedon, who died in Kalimpong, India in the 1980s. At 17, she fled to a monastery after overhearing plans to marry her off. The monastery was three days away on horseback. The Tibetan Joan of Arc Now known as Ani Pachen translated Nun Great Courage , she lived in the monastery for the next 18 years. Education Reynolds studied History of Religions, Anthropology , Arabic , Sanskrit , Tibetan language Tibetan , and Buddhist Studies at Columbia University , at the University of California at University of California, Berkeley Berkeley , and at the University of Washington at Seattle . At Columbia University Reynolds pursued Islamic Studies under Arthur Jeffrey along with Iranian Studies under J. Duchesne Guillemin. Reynolds did his PhD research in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Buddhist Philosophy under Edward Conze , the lauded scholar of the Buddhist Prajnaparamita literature. Field research and experience Post PhD, Reynolds spent circa ten years in India and Nepal doing fieldwork research at a number of Hindu Ashrams in South India and at Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling , Nepal and Kalimpong . At these Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Reynolds studied and researched the rituals, literature and meditation practices of the Kagyu pa and Nyingma pa. Reynolds Lama teachers included Dezhung Rinpoche , Kangyur Rinpoche , Chatral Rinpoche , Dudjom Rinpoche , Kalu Rinpoche , Gyalwa Karmapa , and Lama Gonpo Tseten amongst others.
