  1. M16 motorway

unreferenced date February 2009 The M16 motorway was the designation planned in the late 1960s and early 1970s for use on Ringway 3 , a new motorway planned as part of the London Ringways Plan to run a circular route around London . Construction of the first section of the M16 began in 1973 between South Mimms and Potters Bar in Hertfordshire and opened in September 1975 with the temporary general purpose road designation A1178. During construction of the first section of the motorway, the majority of the Ringways plan was cancelled and, in 1975 the plans for Ringway 3 were modified to combine it with parts of another motorway, Ringway 4 , the outermost Ringway. The M16 designation was dropped and the combined motorway was given the designation M25 motorway M25 which had originally been intended for the southern and western part of Ringway 4. The section of Ringway 3 west of South Mimms anti clockwise around London to Swanley in Kent was cancelled and the section clockwise from Potters Bar to the Dartford Crossing Dartford Tunnel was constructed between 1979 and 1982. The section of Ringway 3 south of the river between Dartford and Swanley was constructed between 1974 and 1977. The South Mimms junction was originally intended to be the end of a short spur connecting the A1 road Great Britain A1 to the M16. The main alignment of the M16 would have continued south west of the junction towards Radlett and Bushey . Evidence of this unbuilt alignment remains in the wide gap between the carriageways to the east of the South Mimms junction which would have been the point at which the spur would have separated from the continuing carriageway. 1. Ringway 3

unreferenced date February 2009 Image London Ringway 3 1960s Plan.png 400px thumb Ringway 3 Ringway 3 was the third from the centre of the series of four London Ringways , Beltway ring roads planned in the 1960s to circle London at various distances from the city centre. They were part of a comprehensive scheme developed by the Greater London Council GLC to alleviate traffic congestion on the city s road system by providing high speed motorway standard roads within the capital linking a series of radial roads taking traffic into and out of the city. Most of the scheme was cancelled in 1973. for a detailed history see London Ringways Ringway 3 was planned as a new motorway running either through or around the periphery of the capital s outer suburbs linking areas such as Barnet , Epping , Dartford , Purley, London Purley and Chessington . Construction began on the first section of the motorway between South Mimms and Potters Bar in 1973 and the motorway was initially designated as the M16 motorway before its opening. Whilst the construction of the first section was in progress, the plan for Ringways 3 and Ringway 4 4 was modified considerably. Broadly speaking, the northern and eastern section of Ringway 3 from the current junction 23 of the M25 motorway with the A1 road Great Britain A1 east and south to the current junction 3 with the M20 motorway M20 was to be built and connected to the southern and western section of Ringway 4 to create the M25. The remaining parts of the two rings became redundant. The South Mimms to Potters Bar section junction 23 to junction 24 was opened in 1975, temporarily designated as an A road A1178 road A1178 . The remaining sections of the northern Ringway 3 were constructed over the next eleven years the M25 motorway was completed in 1986 with the opening of the Ringway 4 to Ringway 3 linking section from Micklefield to South Mimms junction 19 to junction 23 .
