Abul Hasan al Hasan ibn Ali alternatly known as Al Hassan ibn Ziri 1109 1171 was the last ruler of the Zirid dynasty in Ifriqiya 1121 1152. He succeeded Ali ibn Yahya . Under his reign, piracy became an important source of income, although in turn this destabilised the relationships to the Christian maritime cultures. In order to secure trade in the Mediterranean he was forced to accept dependence on the Norman controlled Sicily. Badis ibn Mansur succeeded his father Al Mansur ibn Buluggin 984 995 as viceroy of Ifriqiya . He stayed very close to his overlords, the Fatimids of Egypt ref Talbi 1970 notes that he sent the poet ar Raqiq on a diplomatic mission to Cairo . ref , on account of a power struggle amongst the Zirids his right to rule was challenged by his great uncle Zawi ibn Ziri , who was ultimately driven into Andalusia where he founded the Zirid dynasty of Granada 1012 1090 . More serious was the challenge posed by his uncle Hammad ibn Buluggin , who as governor of Algeria was building up his power and had established his own residence at Bejaia ultimately, in 1014, the Hammadids separated from the Zirids . In the ensuing struggle the Zirids received no support from the Fatimids, and were forced to concede the independence of the breakaway dynasty. Badis was succeeded by Al Muizz ibn Badis . It had been prompted by the actions of its ruler Tamim rule 1062 1108 as a pirate in waters off the Italian peninsula, along with his involvement in Sicily fighting the Norman invasion. The attack was led by Hugh of Pisa , with military aid from Rome the nobleman Pantaleone from Amalfi was also involved, and the whole endeavour had the backing of Matilda of Tuscany . It succeeded in capturing the city, but they could not hold it the money from the plunder was spent on the cathedral at Pisa and to build a new church. Crusade historian Carl Erdmann considers the raid a direct precursor to the First Crusade ganz als Kreuzzug ausgef hrt which occurred eight years later, as it was conducted under the banner of Saint Peter St. Peter against a Muslim ruler who was demonised in the accounts of it, and a form of indulgence was granted to the campaigners by Pope Victor III .
