For interrogation of female suspects without threatening life or limb, z nzh was generally applied. It consisted of a set of six wooden sticks positioned around and between the fingers and connected by strings. Each time the prisoner refused to testify or confess, the string was pulled, slowly, agonisingly squeezing the fingers between the sticks until their bones were crushed. Life Count Solms Laubach studied in Giessen , Berlin , Fribourg and Geneva . In 1868 he obtained habilitation at the University of Halle Wittenberg . In 1872 he became associate professor at the Ubiversity of Strasbourg in 1879 he was appointed professor and director of the botanical garden in G ttingen , and in 1888 in Strasbourg . He spent the years 1883 1884 traveling in Java . He was a foreign member of the Linnean Society , the Royal Society , the Geographic Society and recipient of the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1911. Work His work extended to most branches of botany, especially in systematics and paleontology. Ludwig Barth zu Barthenau 17 January 1839 3 August 1890 was an Austrian chemist born in Rovereto . He studied under Justus von Liebig 1803 1873 in University of Munich Munich , and in 1867 was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of Innsbruck . In 1876 he succeeded Heinrich Hlasiwetz 1825 1875 as professor of chemistry at the University of Vienna . He is remembered for his studies of benzene benzol derivatives, and is credited with the discovery of resorcinol .
